1937 Massey-Harris Challenger for sale

For Sale:  1937 Massey-Harris Challenger  s/n 132378

Here is a tractor that I have had for several years, and have never gotten around to doing anything with  other than drive it around a couple of times per year.  I am over my self-imposed quota on number of tractors in the collection, so some have to go.  For various reasons, I have decided to let this be one of them.

Some of you know the story behind this tractor.  In short, when I purchased it based on a couple of poor quality, dark photographs and conversation with the prior owner – it was terribly mis-represented as a “fully restored” tractor.  As a result of believing that, I paid too much for it.  I know I can’t get back my investment – my loss.  So, here we go with my best effort to represent it for what it really is.

On the positive side, this tractor starts easily, runs great, and drives out very well in all the gears.

But it does have issues, including:
- IHC Magneto
- Wrong carb (manifold modified to accept a 44 style carb)
- Mis-matched rear cut-off wheels and tires
- After a short period of running, it will push coolant out the overflow pipe, and the coolant has turned a brownish color.  Still tests good for anti-freeze capability down to -10 F.
- No brake covers but I have picked-up a decent pair at an auction along the way.
- Rear hitch kludged, but I have also picked up hitch parts at another auction along the way.
- It does not have a good paint job on it…

Selling price for this tractor as described above:    $2,300
(Unfortunately, well below what I paid for it in the year 2000…)

Other parts I have picked-up that I will price separately:

- A nice correct carburetor:  $200

- Nice set of factor round rear wheels:   $800

- One very nice factor round front wheel:   $150

- One factor round front wheel in need of repair:  $50
(The one with the tire on it in the photo.  Has a couple of rust break-throughs on the rim.)

Prefer not to sell the wheels or carb without the tractor at this time.  I think whoever wants the tractor will want those to go with it.

The tractor is located in Shelby County, Indiana.  If you need help for delivery we can discuss potential options there.

If you have any other questions, please ask.

Thanks,

JB
