If you are a true Massey man and don't know what to do with your extra cash you can own a piece of Massey history just down the road from the Massey Restaurant. If you buy this you can go to the Massey Restaurant every morning for coffee.

If it works here is a link to this piece of history you can own for as low as just  $325 dollara per square foot and up. Plenty of head room with the 12-17 foot ceilings!

RE:Massey mens' food!

Joe,

I had heard about the conversion of the old MH HQ offices but we've never seen the building before or after conversion.  Quite frankly I would rather shoot myself than live in a city!  Even in that fine historic building.

No - I'd settle for a regular house in Newcastle I think and negotiate a barbecue plot on the old MH foundry sit there.  Additionally the journey out from Toronto to Newcastle is one hell of a tedious, arduous, bore which after two or three trips would drive you insane.  That huge highway really is horrible.

Dream on!!!

The Newcastle Historical Society put on a wonderful featured Massey show in 2001, great displays of local Massey History in the Community Hall  together with collectors and dealers showing off some wonderful Massey Memorabilia, I must say the food in the Massey Restaurant that weekend was fantastic and the display at the farm on the edge of town created great interest with exhibitors, collectors and local public.

Another show was organised for 2003 and such a shame that this one did not have the same enthusiasm and support from the Massey Collectors.

Attached are some photographs of the Memorabilia from both Massey Shows in Newcastle.

RE:Massey mens' food!

I know I have de-railed this thread  from "Massey Food" to Newcastle Ontario, but that is where Daniel Massey firmly put his roots down, followed by great growth and success, eventually out growing Newcastle and heading for Toronto and worldwide global trading, shame we see it now as "Massey Lofts" and all lost in the current trend of urbanisation.

Attached is a photograph showing that progression with three cast iron seats, The Rake first made in Newcastle, then The Rake with no address whilst in transition and finally The Rake Toronto.

RE:Massey mens' food!

When Malcolm and I travel to N. America - that is both Canada and the USA - we have withdrawl symptoms from not being able to find roast potatoes as we do them over here in the UK and indeed in many European Continental countries.  We do miss our roast potatoes, so again Joe and Gary it is something to turn your thoughts to given that you are not having much luck on the double Jersey cream front.

So why oh why no roast potatoes over there?  They are so simple and so delicious.  We simply peel and parboil, then put them in an open roasting tin in a hot oven till they brown.  Cook them in beef dripping, lard or olive oil, or simply around a good sized joint of beef, pork or lamb with the fat coming off it.  I stress they must not be covered whilst cooking or they do not crisp and brown up.

Sunday just isn't Sunday withour a meat joint to roast and roast potatoes with it, and also some roast parsnips in winter too.

Maybe the answer is simply that you don't do open roasts like we do???  Am I right in thinking that pot raosting and casseroles rule the day over there.

Over to you Joe and Gary!

John

RE:Massey mens' food!

Apparently the heat is on in the Mid West so we hear, different to the monsoon we have here right now. So guess in the high temperatures no one has thought about the raost meat with roast potatoes mentioned in the previous post.
So just to get the thread moving again here is a photo of a good qaulity ice cream enjoyed in true Massey style.

Malcolm:

It is SOOOOOOO Hot Here!!!   100+ Degrees  Ice cream is out of the question unless indoors or it will be like spooning milk in no time. I found a great recipie for the roasted potatos here just waiting for it to cool off a bit before I try it.

Like I said it is SOOOOOOO Hot here I figured I would take advantage of the elements around me so here is my experiment for yesterday. I made some Molasses Cookies on the hood of my recently oiled down Wallis hood. They look good but I think the tase of the diesel and hydraulic oil would be a bit more than I can stomach.
Keep Cool!!!!

RE:Massey mens' food!

Joe,

Those cookies look absolutely great.  A true Massey man would not be concerned about a bit of a taste of diesel.  My great grandfather would apparently sack any man who washed his hands at lunch time when they were threshing with steam engines - and they were never short of oil and muck on them!

Just as importantly that oiled down hood looks far better than any paint job ever could - glad the habit is catching on over there and it does make routine preservation so simple, easy and quick as I am sure you have discovered

Here our appaling wet cool spell continues.  It is frightfully damp and today temps have risen to a great 65 with 82% humidity so its pretty stuffy.  Tomorrow is forecast to be a dreadful wet day with a north wind all across the centre of UK which includes me and Malcolm, it is forecast to be worse on his side so that doesn't matter!!!!!!

RE:Massey mens' food!

Those cookies look too good to be true.  How do we know you didn't just set a cookie on there and take a picture?

I want to see a bowl, batter, and you with an apron on and then I will believe it!
