RE:Challenger

The rear wheels on our Challenger are cut down steel, the one I have repaired has cleaned up really well showing a lot of original yellow paint.
The other rear wheel isn't as good, although it held air and the rim is good the hub has been cracked and has a lot welding on it, so if anyone has a wheel with a good hub and a bad rim I would be interested.

RE:Challenger

I can see you are busy in the shed Graham and not progressing your house project this winter Graham??

You must get the Christmas tree up with the lights on before Christmas to keep everyone happy.

There is some nice original paint left on your rear wheel spokes and hub, is it the lighter cream we are used to seeing in the UK? or the straw yellow faded? difficult to tell from the photograph.

Challenger wheels seem prone to cracking if the bolts are not tightened up evenly, yours has had a good blacksmith's repair, have seen several over the years with various types of farmer fixes to hold the hub together.

I expect Dennis Brown will find you a hub from hs bone pile.

Malcolm.

RE:Challenger

Graham,

I wouldn't worry about a cracked hub.  If you think about it the hub is held very, very rigidly by the six  very sturdy attachment studs.  I believe that the cracks are due to stress in the casting.

I have two CHs with such fractures in the hub.  The first belonged to my great uncle and was defintley used extensivley with the fracture towing a large heavy Jones Lion baler with 4 wheel bale trailer for many seasons.

The second came about when I bought a pair of very good (like new) tip toe steels to put on my red CH.  I was carrying them on my fork lift and they slipped off from only a low height and one fractured.  I have however fitted it to the tractor and driven it and all is OK.  I figured that for it to happen under such low impact circumstances that it must have been pent up casting stress.  But I was so annoyed at this happening that I had my blacksmith make me a very robust band to put round the hub to protect it but in all honesty I don't think it is necessary.  Hope this shows up OK on the photo.

John

RE:Challenger

Hello Graham,   I have several extra flat spoked hubs with bad rims . We had -11 this am . Probably balmy compared to your temps.  Talk to you later Dennis 319-240-2766

RE:Challenger

John,

I am not worried at all about the hub being cracked it has had a very good strong repair, it is just that the other wheel has cleaned up so well I wanted both wheels to match.

Malcolm,

I think the yellow paint has faded quite a bit it looked very dry and wethered before I cleaned it and yes I am busy with the house at moment, not done anything to the Massey's for well over two weeks now.

RE:Challenger

Hi guys and G'day from Down under. This is my first post and my first day on this great site. I have been interested in the challenger thread. You blokes seem to know what you are on about. Hope you can help. I recently purchased what I believe is an unstyled challenger (engine exchanged with a red pacemaker and all painted red) with standard axles. It has the challenger serial number, turning brakes, rear steering post and wide guards (fenders). Is this unusual? I will try and attach a pic. Regards Buck

RE:Challenger

Welcome Aussie Massey!  May you be the first of many to communicate from down under.  We'll certainly be able to help you one way and another amongst our selves.

My first reaction is that you have an orchard Pacemaker on your hands and not a Challenger.  Those independant turning brakes are typical of the orchard PAs and not Challengers whihc had totally different pedals.

Send us some more  pics and the serial number then we can be certain.  In usual fashion you seem to have Aussie produced wheels and not the standard ones from the USA  We in the UK also fitted our own wheels to the PAs.

Are there many Challengers down in Aus?

Keep up the good work!

John

RE:Challenger

Hi Buck I'm trying to put together a list of M-H wrenches and also the companies that they were associated with like H V McKay etc. If you have any Aussie M-H wrenches or H V McKay wrenches that you could take a photo of and put them on this website that would be a great help. Thanks Alan

RE:Challenger

Welcome to Massey Collectors Buck,

I am looking forward to hearing more Massey history and seeing your projects from Australia, so please keep posting away, this is the place for all things Wallis and Massey.

I am pretty sure John has nailed your tractor down, from the two photographs it looks like a green unstyled OPA, we look forward to more photographs especially the manifold and carburetor side of the engine.

Expect Tom Seaberg will soon be on here and keen to add your tractor to his growing list, what is the serial number?

Good luck with your projects and let's see some "Sunshine" Massey's on here.

Malcolm.

RE:Challenger

G'day from USA Aussiemassey
You have a very interesting and unusual  tractor. I am guessing your tracor serial no. is between 200251 and 200402 . Making it an unstyled orchard PA. Rear end is deffinately an orchard. It has the1/4 round bar connecting the fenders, an unstyled gas tank, and unstyled rad..It  looks like a styled head on the engine and deffinately not a set back front axle. Waiting to see your serial no. I have 200355. Talk to you later Dennis
