MH 55, wont start

Hi all,

So I get home from work and my brother proceeds to tell me that dad had to move my 55 and said after he moved it and went to put it back in the garage it died on him. He then tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. From what my brother tells me I think dad got in a hurry and flooded it. I just went out and tried it again and it wont start. Now I will note, it has new spark plugs, new alternator/battery has plenty of cranking power, it has fuel, fuel tank/fuel line is not plugged and it is getting fuel because I can smell it. Honestly I think its getting too much fuel because when I put my hand under the carburetor, it was wet with gas. So, could it still be flooded from earlier? Or could it be something else that I'm not catching? It started and ran just fine the other day when I had it out.

Cheers,

RE:MH 55, wont start

Do you have spark?

Pull coil wire off top of the dist. cap, hold it near a good ground and crank it over. should see a good blue spark.

I will have to look into that. I take it that if I don't see a good spark, the coil needs replaced? Thanks Joe.

RE:MH 55, wont start

Dakota,

If no spark check the points first to see if they are burned. I noticed in your earlier post you noted it had a new "Alternator" not "Generator" are you running this on 12 Volt? If so the coil is probably a 6 volt coil so it could very easily burned it out.

Just a thought,

Joe

RE:MH 55, wont start

Yes we converted it to a 12V system because we found that 6V was not enough to crank it over. Well I feel stupid, didn't think about converting the coil to 12V. Now that you mention that, I'd be willing to bet that is the issue.

I appreciate the help Joe. Thanks.

RE:MH 55, wont start

Hey guys,

Looking for recommendations, when I put the new coil on, should I check to make sure the spark plugs aren't fouled from possible flooding? What would you guys do? The plugs are new, so if they are fouled, would I get away with cleaning them?

Dakota,

I'm 99% sure that you will be OK and the tractor will fire up straight away - especially as it has been standing a while

Good luck
John
