Massey-Harris Rear-End Oil

Hey Folks,

The old manuals call for "SAE 90 Transmission Oil" for the rear-ends in the 33/44/55 vintage tractors.  I am curious what folks have been using in your tractors recently.  I am not having any luck locally finding anything labeled as "SAE 90 Transmission Oil"...

Thanks,

JB

It says in my 44 Instuction Book to use SAE 90 oil in the winter and SAE 140 in the summer.
I use SAE 140 all year round but of course it will be a lot colder in the winter your side of the pond.

John,

Is heavy oil really necessary?  Ferguson tractors used a "tractor universal" oil of SAE grade for the engine and rear axle which inlcuded the hydraulic pump and they went forever.  AGCO dealer here sell the same sort of thing now reccomending it for the older 50s type MFs.

I would have thought that an oil in the 30-50 range would be perfectly OK for the odd hour or two these old brutes are ever going to do these days???

I put 30 oil in my green Challenger and it is fine.  Don't forget that modern oils are of infinitely superior quality to the old ones and after all you are only seeking some lubrication for very short periods of time.

No doubt someone will get violent and contradict me!!!!!!

RE:Massey-Harris Rear-End Oil

I recently heard of someone that has a 444 with excessive rear end noise. He put in eleven gallons of 85W - 140 and two gallons of STP with satisfying results. Has anyone heard of adding STP to the rear end and transmission?
I've been using straight 85W - 140 in mine.
