1956 vintage cultivator colors??

Hello folks,

I received a call from a gentleman who has a set of two-row, front mount cultivators for his Massey-Harris 50 (38" rears and narrow front) tractor.  He is wanting to restore the cultivators, and asked me what the color scheme should be.

Does anybody know, or have any literature that shows these cultivators would be painted anything other than all Massey-Harris red?

Thanks,

JB

John,

I have a buyer's Guide that shows an MH50 with 2 row mounted cultivators that are all red except the shovels appears black.  Hope this helps.

RE:1956 vintage cultivator colors??

Terry,

Thanks for the reply.  Is the picture below that I scanned from the 1957 Buyer's Guide the same one you referred to?  It is the only one in color that I have found in my literature.  I agree with you it looks like the "C-tines" or "C-Shanks", whatever you want to call them, are black, and the rest of the cultivator is Massey red.  At least in this picture.

Sometimes the "pictures" in these older Buyer's Guides have been "colorized" by whomever is putting together the publication, and one can't always be 100% sure that the actual piece of equipment was painted those colors in the factory.  However, I think all red with black shanks is very defendable for authenticity, and that is what I am going to share with him.

Unless, of course, somebody else speaks up with first hand knowledge disputing this color scheme.   ;-)

Cheers,

JB

John,

That's the same picture I was looking at.  I agree that sometimes the colored sales literature is questionable.

I remember selling shovels for those older cultivators. The replacement shovels were a dark almost see through blue. I imagine that was a coating the parts dept or vendor Massey bought from painted them. Other replacement tillage and mower parts were painted that way also. Just an FYI
