I am restoring a 44 with Hydaulics on it. I want to eliminate as many oil leaks as I can. Would it work to remove the gear and shaft from the pump and make a cover to go over the hole where the gear was and leave the system dry?

Dan, It has been done on my 44 without any problems. I probably need a better gasket on my cover plate as it has a tiny seep.
