33D Serial Number help

Just bought a project tractor and the serial number has a P after it.
33D1RF9751P
Anybody know what the P is for?

Also has this sprocket on the belt pulley shaft, and a smaller one on the frame.

RE:33D Serial Number help

glentaybow,

This has come up before but It's been a long time ago, If I remember right the "P" indicates that it left the factory with a PSB injection pump on it. I know there are others but can't remember what they are just at the moment. I am not really up on my info on the diesels but just going by what I remember being talked about on here. I am sure there are many members out there that are of more knowledge with this subject than me and hope they chime in..

As for the sprocket on the belt pulley shaft I believe this is for the two row mounted corn picker drive, I had one like it several years back but is in a collection in Illinois now. This may have also been what they ran other attachments from also like a planter or something but for some reason I think the planter ran off a sprocket that bolted to the rear axel shaft in two halves but could be wrong about that as it's been about 10 years since I have seen one of these at a show. I am leaning more so to the two row picker chain drive...

RE:33D Serial Number help

I know nothing about 33D's but I have a 44D as I am sure many other people have and that is fitted with a Bocsh PBS pump. I will have to look at it's serial number Alan

RE:33D Serial Number help

I have always heard it the same way as Joe mentioned.  The "P" stamped at the end of the serial number means it was built with the American Bosch PSB fuel pump.  However, I don't believe it was always done that way.  I went out to the barn this afternoon and looked at my diesels of this vintage closely.  Here's what I found:

1950 44 D1SF 2977    -   No "P", but it has the PSB4A fuel pump
1952 44 D1RF 4992   -  No "P", but it has the PSB4A fuel pump
1954 33 D1RF 9306P   -  has the PSB4A fuel pump
1954 44 D1RF 55235P  -  has the PSB4A fuel pump (this is a 44 Special)
1957 444 D1SF 74122P  -  has the PSB4A fuel pump

Based only on what's in my barn, one would be tempted to make the conclusion that Massey didn't start stamping the "P" at the end of the serial number until sometime after 1952.

Does anybody out there have evidence to suggest otherwise??

Thanks,

JB

RE:33D Serial Number help

Thanks JB and all others who offered explanations.  Looks like the P on my serial number means PSB injection pump.

JB, would you mind posting some pictures of your 33D?  Mine is also a '54

Thanks, Glenn

RE:33D Serial Number help

Glen,

I was a bit surprised when I went to my 33 DR photo file to find that I don't have my usual group of photos for this tractor...  I will need to remedy that next time I have it out of the barn.   I am attaching the photos I have, some of those cropping out other tractors that were in the photo together with the 33 DR.

This tractor is mostly the way I purchased it.  I have put new tires on it, added the under fuel tank battery box, top battery box cover/lid in the hood, one of the headlights, and baffle under the radiator in front.  I am not convinced that the hood decals are correct, or whether they should be like the 44 Diesel, where the numbers are smaller...

Anyway, for what it's worth, here are the photos I have of my 33 DR.

RE:33D Serial Number help

Lyn Jones from West Wales ( who some of you will know) rang me last evening to tell me the serial number on his 33 D is 33 D ISF 12499P.

Hope this helps

Alan

RE:33D Serial Number help

Dug through some old pictures, here is some of Lyn's very nice original 33D and Serial numbers.
