Massey Harris Foldout Advertisements

I have always been a fan of Massey advertising and have a special interest in the foldout ad's produced and distributed through the dealers in the 20's, 30's and 40's. Through the years they made hundreds of different type foldouts and they are all numbered from what I have been able to figure out. One day I had thought it would be neat to have them all but due to the large number of different ad's I think we will be lucky to just see an example of each, So I thought I would start a thread listing the ad's that I have and maybe other's will join in. I only have about 20 of them so far so less than 10%.

Here is the lowest number I have which is called out as "Form No. Adv. 20" this ad covers the #3 Massey Plow.

RE:Massey Harris Foldout Advertisements

Hello Tom,

You have touched on another "soft spot" of mine in my literature collection, I have been gathering thes foldouts up since 1990 and will have to do a count one evening when I have nothing better to do, I am sure you are aware the early ones do not carry the "form / adv" number, and I have a list of the adv's and cross them off when I get the ones I am still looking for.
I have also noticed in my collection the same brochure on an implement can have two different "form / adv" numbers and the only difference is the colour, photo or style of front cover.

I will count up and post some illustrations for you when time allows, but here is the Unstyled Pacemaker one for now.

RE:Massey Harris Foldout Advertisements

Hi Malcolm, I thought this thread would get you interested!  I have been doing a little bit of an inventory on my advertisements and books so I wanted to get pictures of everything.

The first one pictured here is of an early style massey brochure from 1929 from what I can tell. it says on the ad massey was started 82 years ago at that time.

Next is a nice #9 combine foldout #60. It just happens to be from the same place in Grand Island NE the lot of ebay brochures are from.

Do you happen to know if the foldouts from England are numbered? I have one but have not taken it out of the frame yet. I find tha keeping them in frames is a good way to store them but usually the frame is more expensive than the foldout!

RE:Massey Harris Foldout Advertisements

Tom,

The foldout brochures which measure 3inch X 6inch are fascinating, they are out there in large numbers from Massey-Harris, J I Case Plow Works and M-H Blackstone.

There are more categories than the "Form Adv" mentioned earlier and will list my findings below.

1. Early M-H of Canadian, American and Britsh origin have no markings.

2. Form ADV numbers 1 to 338, all countries.

3. List numbers 1 to 220 mostly USA and Great Britain

4. Letters - numbers, (example F-13, I-91, J-4W, J-14) mostly early USA and Great Britain

5. Numbers - letters  (example 247-1-37W

I have checked my files and list this morning and have 185 in total so far which is only a very small amount of the list above and I do not know how high the numbering went, 338 is my highest in the "Form Adv" list and 220 is my highest in "list numbers".

I expect Keith Oltroggee could help us out here with more.
Has anyone any with higher numbers than these?, if so please let us know, then my "wanted" list will grow, like Tom I hoped to get as near a complete set as possible, that was in the early 90's and still a long way to go.

I will post some pictures shortly showing some of the variations.

Then of course there are the larger sized foldouts like Tom has just posted, a lot of these seem to have more of the Canadian origin and connection

Malcolm.

The lowest number foldout I have from the "Form Adv list is 4" detailing the M-H 3A corn binder.

Many thanks Keith, what is your highest number?

Here is ADV 27 one of the few foldouts I have which has two versions of front and rear cover, guess there was a re-print at some point?.

Here is an early Canadian foldout with no number or reference, a very nice brochure on the M-H sleighs.
