RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

Here are the shots of the No. 2 hubs.  The red and green ones are the "oldest" as far as we can fathom it out.

Will you be viewing snowmobile hubs at Joe's place in 2 weeks time??!!

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the No 2 wheel hubs following our in depth discussion on one of our Winter Massey Meets in the West, I have seen a Parrett E with the same style of hub as the green wheels photographed, but the only difference I could observe was Parrett put a large raised cast "P" in the front hub caps.

I looked at some Parrett E photographs last night trying to count the pinion gear teeth at a distance, I am sure it was 11, it would be good to get this confirmed from an E owner, then we know the H has 13, so then it leaves you in a conundrum of why 13 on your M-H No 2.

It looks like your project is moving forward at considerable speed, have you found an engine yet? I notived in the last Legacy there was an ad for another engine wanted in SK, so yet another one required, maybe you should be like Allan Severson on Smokstak who is making the Big Four engines, you could start a Buda production line.

For what it is worth, here are a few pics of the Parrett that was at Massey Days this past summer.  When you blow the pics up you can see the hubs, both front and rear have the P on them.  Can't see the gear but we could probably chase down the owner to see!!  The sign says it is owned by Ira Underwood. I am sure Floyd Moore would know them.

Thanks for the pictures John, All my wheels look like your green ones. I guess that is the older style. I have noticed that most of them are of the later style. We have been thinking that these wheels were a purchased item because there is so many wheels similar in design used by other manufacturers.

And I have not seen any E Parretts with the bolt on hub caps. But on the H Parrett  they all were supposed to have the three bolt hub caps and Timken tapered bearings. The is two different style hub caps use on the wheels. The early style has P cast on them and then some time they switched to a more plain design. I have another front axle and wheels off an H Parrett with these later style hub caps. The Parretts from what I have seen used many different wheels too. at least 4 different style rears and 3 different fronts between the E and H models.

I have had very little luck on the engine. I did find one but I am not paying the $20,000 asking price for it!  Wasnt that nice either. The best bet in my opinion is going to be making the cylinder block and heads. That has been the plan for a while anyway just have no pattern yet! The crankcase is the partially the same as some of the truck engines so I might be able to get one of them and fix the picture window in my crankcase. The want ad from SK could probably be for the tractor at the Sukanen Museum, or another one I don't know of.

RE:Massey Harris #2

I think this may be one for both Tom and Joe to explore, as Joe recently worked out the un-identified part in the wrench thread from the part number.

Well over a year ago Gary Biewer advertised a M-H fuel filler funnel on the internet adverts, the fitting it was screwed into looked identical to the fitings on both my No 2 and No 3 tractors, so very quickly bought it. Then it sat in Gary's office for months and maybe Tom has seen it there? Last August whilst passing through Barnesville I picked it up and just got round to looking at it in more depth now it is back in England.

I know other early tractor manufacturers like I-H offered fuel funnels and can understand that Massey Harris were following a manufacturers trend, I have checked the No 2 parts list and do not see a fuel funnel listed and the part numbers for the tractor are pre fixed AA,
On this funnel the base is part No GA 262 and the five inch diameter lid is number GA171, inside the lid there is a lovely anti splash device and the fitting which would be soldered to tank is definatley the same as the tractors, so wondering what it is off,.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Malcolm:

I did alot of searching through numbers and the ( G ) comes up alot in Kerosene hit & Miss engines but I don't have enough numbers for all the engines.

If I were to guess I would say this was mounted on top of some kind of an Orchard sprayer or Field sprayer tank, It would make the most sense for the anti splash gaurd under the cover and the large five inch opening on top to pour the chemicals in without spilling.

I don't have any books on sprayers but it may be an avenue to look into.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Well I did some looking tonight and found the original home for your fuel funnel Malcolm, My large parts list for early Massey combines shows the fuel funnel on three models. it will fit the #9, #9a and #9b combines. Gary also had or maybe still has a radiator off one of these combines but he assured me there was nothing left of the rest of the combine. Maybe just a coincidence?
Here is a quick picture of the parts list page showing the two parts you have.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Many thanks Tom and Joe,

I knew between you both I would get the answer and thanks for the copy of the parts list page Tom.

Now do I have the start of a combine project??  I am not sure if you know Tom but the first photograph in your last post on the Implements thread with the Wallis tractor pulling the combine was taken in Lincolnshire and over the years it has appeared in several M-H brochures and magazine articles.

Now I had better get on with my shed extension this year otherwise I will not have room for a combine project!

RE:Massey Harris #2

I have been doing some more thinking and planning on this project. Jim G was kind enough to send me some dimensions on the #2 platform. I am wondering if one of you guys could get some measurements on the platform and hitch just to make sure there is no difference in the numbers and a double check.
Jim sent me these dimensions.
platform 1/8" thick 46.25" wide 34.125" long
drawbar 1"x3"x41"

Would be nice to know the size of irons for the drawbar frame and the locatons of the holes in platform for drawbar adjustment and wood planks.
Thanks!

I also found this neat picture of a "Rice" model Parrett

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

I went down to the shed this afternoon to look at the No 2 drawbars and platforms even tho' you have already had a response on this.

Interestingly, a point which I had not noted before, the hitch end of the drawbar on our "younger" No 2 has a swan neck whilst the "older" one is flat.  I wonder does this tell us something?  Also I thought my "younger" one was an inch shorter at 40 inches.

The boards for the platforms are quite simply the gross width of the channel iron chassis and the boards are bolted underneath on mine.   I measured the length (i.e. back to front) at 34.5 inches but the difference is neither here nor there.- it simply goes more or less right up to the air cleaner.
