RE:Massey Harris Implements.

The first real heat of the year this weekend in UK, it makes everyone feel so much better after such a long and cold winter. Soon we shall be shouting for some of your rain John, but hopefully not until our Rally is over at the end of May, we have had enough bad ones in recent years so want to break the tradition and have glorious sunshine this year.

Getting back the the implements, here are some photo's of a nice mounted cultivator with rear weeder fitted to a Pony 820 seen at the recent Cheffins auction, I presume a recent import from France.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

I have been out this weekend with good old "Shire Horse Power" in the ""root crop" feature at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Show. This feature showed all types of root crop production machinery from the horse era through the various decades, right up to todays large self propelled machines.

For six months they kept asking if I would take it out and on the day it was nice to see a piece of M-H equipment amongst the display of many local blacksmith and British manufactured implements, many people had never seen a  horse drawn elevator digger before. We put a different pair of horses on each day in the parade around the main ring.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Good looking digger!!  And the horses aren't bad either!!  I do have one question though.  Whenever I see you out with one of your tractors working in the fields you are always the operator!!  Where are you in these pics?  That certainly does not look like the Malcolm I know sitting on the digger.  What gives?  They are easier to drive than a tractor.  Just pull right to turn right; pull left to turn left; pull both to stop!!

Gee and haw and woe do the same thing!

We will make a horseman out of you yet.

Thanks for sharing!!

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Gary,

You know the old boy's job is cleaning up what is left behind, so now you know where I was on the day.

Of course we still use your "gee, haw and woe" when we are driving tractors, the beauty of the tractor is you can turn off the key shut the cab door and walk away, or even get on a plane across the pond hunting old Massey's, with those darned four legged things they not only kick at one end and bite at the other, but they also need looking after 365 days of the year, so be sure you will NOT make a horseman out of me, otherwise I will not get across to look at your old iron or sample your strawberries and cream!!!

Joking apart I really like to see and admire them, makes me think of my dad's stories of ploughing an acre a day, times have moved on for the better.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Received this photo this morning so just posting for you Gary so you know I was there!!!

You should come over one year for the Show, or maybe I should get Ony to persaude you as the grounds are almost in the village of "Coddington" and I know that touched a spot when we passed through Newark on your visit here.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Malcolm,

What is the fork for?  Dung removal or prodding the horses to get them moving?

John

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

John,

I like your theory but unfortunately it would not work well for either of those tasks.

It is a beet or root crop fork with oval knobs on the end of the times to prevent them from piercing the crop and it's a long time since it was used,

Malcolm.

Here is the M-H digger behind the 25 at this weekends Carrington Rally, all we needed was a gang of pickers with baskets when parading around the ring each day.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Went to a local Museum auction Saturday, only two items of M-H there which have been sitting out for way too long.

I remember both the No 5 M-H binder and trusser working at their threshing days in the late 1970's and early 80's when my dad used to take our threshing set there.

Both items found new collector homes and kept them away from the scrap man and going to China,

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

I took a little trip this weekend to drop off some Cub Jr parts and I have seen this transplanter several times since it is just a block away from my friends shop. This time I figured it was nice out I'll stop and look. Imagine my surprise when I finally read the lettering! Too bad the family that owned it donated it to the city for this "thing" they made as a display. I have been told it cant be had now but I'm still going to try.
