Industrial Tractors

Recently I was sent this copy of a photograph from Southern Australia.

This looks to me like it was M-H's or maybe Sunshine's attempt at challenging the Minneapolis Moline UDLX comfort tractor?????

Here is the text written on the reverse of the photo, the date being interesting and states it was in Mannum South Australia.

"March 1937 an imported Massey-Harris "Pacemaker" tractor fitted a driver-cabin, pneumatic tyres and a driving light for night operation. The one-piece chassis-frame is clearly visible between the tyres. Note the crank handle (manual start), air cleaner and muffler"

Have you come across one of these Aussie Massey???? I wonder if it remains anywhere in that area today?

Malcolm.

The Aussies also made a crane to mount on the front of a Challenger.  I'll have to see if I can dig out a photo

Found the crane photo's from a Sunshine Bulletin this weekend John, the first one is the styled red Challenger and not sure what model M-H the second photo shows, can anyone pinpoint it from the later series tractors?

RE:Industrial Tractors

Some nice articles. I'll have to keep a look out for these.  The second picture looks like possibly a 203, by looking at the low side bonnet.  The 203 crane that I am still to pick up and the one I have, do not have bonnets, for the ease of maintenance by the Navy. These cranes are a little different to the Malcom Moore version that I have.  I think I have posted photos in a previous post.  I'll try putting one on again.  On the pacemaker industrials, again I found one with a pretty rustic front end loader, plus a Wallis 20/30 with part of a cable type from t end loader attached.  I don't think they looked refined enough to be factory made, just farmers who needed to make their various adaptions to make life easier around the farms.

Malcolm,

Glad you found those two pics before I did!  You must have electronic archiving...

I used exactly the same pics in my book "MF Industrials" though I can't off hand recall my source

RE:Industrial Tractors

Thanks Buck,

Pleased you have managed to rescue a few pieces of industrial heritage with the M-H connection, its amazing what equipment modification and adaptions were turned out of local workshops to enable a job to be done with a bit more ease.
Hope you have some "pickers to keep a watch in the Mannum area for that PA industrial with a cab.

Now all we need is to see how Joe is getting on with the ex Dome Valley "Wallis Industrial" we have not seen any pictures of it lately, its now ten years since the sale and curious if he has replaced the seat mount with a little more spring than the concrete block???

John,
I wonder if Dennis Brown has found one of those Challenger cranes to use as a "yard tractor"???
