started taking the 55 apart

Well on this rather humid day, me and little brother started takin the 55 apart so the clutch can be fixed. This is how far I got today. I did have a heck of a time with the chain coupler on the shaft. I am having trouble getting the pins to come out. I tried tapping on them but they didn't move, I figured I'd better stop before I tear something up. Any recommendations? Or do they need just more persuasion? I'm going to try to remember to post pictures as we get along on this project.

  Cheers,

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Need to soak it down good with penetration oil!!!  If u have the keeper link off can u get the link cap off??  Bet even once you get the connector link out that chain is probably froze up and going to be a bugger to get off!!  I’ve had one soaking in acetone and atv for over a month and it’s still very stiff!!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

I figured that was the case, I did squirt it with some PB blaster Sunday when I was working on it, but wasn't much. I'll go out there tomorrow after work and soak it real good and let her sit. I guess when the cotter keys were giving me fits that should've been a clue, haha.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Don’t know of an easy way around it!!  Do know they can really freeze up as sure no one ever lubes that chain!!!  They are a bear to get loosened up too!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

A little heat would help then cover the the cain in candle wax, as it cools it will draw the wax into the joint and help it come loose. You might have to do that 2 or 3 times. I have had good luch with this proccess.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

I would have thouht that some heat from a propane blow torch would sort the problem quickly - get it up to red heat and let it cool with a few gentle taps with a hammer.

MAKE SURE THE GAS TANK IS OFF FIRST!!!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Well the gas tank has to come off anyway, so I wont have to worry about blowing anything up! Interesting idea Dan, I will have to give that a try. Thanks gents!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Well after much cussin and discussin (actually more cussin) I got the chain coupler finally off the shaft. Ended up using a small propane torch and lots of PB blaster. Even after the pins came out we still had to tap on it to get it to come off. I put it in some oil to hopefully loosen it up some before we put it all back together.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Good luck, I’ve had one soaking in acetone/atf for couple weeks still quite stiff!!!  Think am going to try some heat and maybe the wax!!!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Haha, well one can be hopeful! I'm gonna let her soak for a while and see what happens, although if I'm honest the amount of trouble it has given me so far, I think its going to need some more persuasion, haha.
