MH 22K Project

Well we started looking at the 22K my son drug home to us last year.  Frame is broken, no radiator, tires are gone,  totally froze up and can not be moved other than picking it up.  I scratched my head several times as to why he bought it.  I am still scratching my head after we opened up the transmission housing.  What a surprise.  It is obvious the tractor has sat a while under water.  There was sand on top of all the gears and no oil to be found.  Plenty of rust though!!

The immediate goal is to try and salvage the tranny/rearend case.  If we can get the gears, bears and shafts out without breaking the casting we could be on our way.  The manifold needs some work but it should be repairable.  The fuel tanks are okay (I think).

I have been surprised as to how easy most of the bolts have been to loosen.  I just hope that carries thru inside the housing!!  We will see and we will try to keep you posted on progress (or abandonment)   We have gotten the cultivators off, the seat and bracket, the fenders and platforms, the rims are loose and ready to be removed.

We are going to put a mixture of oil and liquid gold (diesel fuel) inside in hopes it will soak in and loosen some of the crud that is inside.  If anyone has any good ideas let me know!!

Here are a couple of pics to make you appreciate the mess!!

We will see!!

RE:MH 22K Project

I think it is an excellent find!  Keep scratching your head because you don't see too many "Ks"s out there.  Granted theren't aren't too many useful parts on this tractor.

Speaking of that, does anyone know  how many K (for Kerosene) Masseys were produced?  Anyone have any additional details about them?

Thanks!

RE:MH 22K Project

I will have to get some additional photos of this project.  Other individuals have been working diligently on this.  I need to find some time to help as well.

RE:MH 22K Project

I had some time to work on the 22 today.  Here are a few pictures of the engine block.  The crank got polished and the outside is being prepped for paint.  The frame is ready to get its work done after the engine is put back together.

Nice Progress!

RE:MH 22K Project

Are we going to see this tractor at The National Show in Paisley Ontario this year Drew?
Keep Gary busy on the project and we look forward to seeing it, looking better on the new rubber tyres..

Malcolm.

RE:MH 22K Project

Malcolm,

It would be great if this project would be completed before then!  But then there is another problem.  If I drag it up to Ontario, I won't have any room left on the trailer to haul Smyth auction items home ! :-)

Are you planning on coming over?

Drew

RE:MH 22K Project

Drew,

I am sure that 22K will fit on Gary's large trailer with plenty of room left for your auction items, if not then how about taking a semi across the border?

Yes our flights are booked and hotel reservations almost finalised. Always enjoy a good raom around "Massey roots" in Ontario, with plenty of great collections and eating places to stop at!!!

Malcolm.

RE:MH 22K Project

Here is an update....

Frame is sanded, primed and painted with first coat of red.
Engine is buttoned up and ready to be installed after two bearings get delivered.
1 of 2 fenders are sanded and almost ready for primer and paint.
Both tanks (don't forget it is a K so one for Gas and one for Kerosene) have been sanded on the outside, acid washed on the inside, and ready for tank sealer and primer and paint.

It is coming along nicely!

RE:MH 22K Project

Thanks for the update on the 22K, it`s amazing how with a little effort a pile of junk can become a nice tractor. Can`t wait to see more of Malcolm`s next project, although I think it will be a bigger challenge this one.
