RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

John,

I'm glad to see you weren't afraid to tear into your GP to fix the brake band problem, I told you they were pretty easy to work on just don't over think it and you will be fine.

I've been strolling through this thread on the GPs today, there is more information on this thread than anywhere else on the internet. I see there are over 223,000 views so there are a lot of people out there besides just us that are interested in learning about GPs so might as well keep talking about them.....

I am still trying to pin point when the early serial number plates switched from having the bottom cut off to going with a full oval tag. As of now I am looking for GPs with a serial number between 300720 and 300764 anyone out there know where any of these 44 missing GPs are hiding? If so take a picture of the Serial number and let me know or post it on here so we can track this down. I am thinking possibly the first 750 GPs that were made have the tags cut off but that's just a guess.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Loosing reply buttons again so had to go search back a few posts.

John,

Regarding you question to a post in another thread, Yes the GP at Larry's is one of the other Industrial GPs we spoke of in the past. I would love to live long enough to get this In my collection because it is only three serial numbers earlier than my Industrial. Would be great seeing them next to each other... The serial tag on Larry's is 303035 and mine is 303038-50. For some reason Larry's is not stamped "50" possibly because it left the factory with the Skeleton wheels and this was not normal?? With these Skeleton wheels on it makes it a "40" inch tractor Pretty Cool Hu..

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Joe,

So does mean that there are now three known industrial GPs.  I wasn't aware that you had found one for yourself - a new aquisition?

John

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

John,

There are four Industrials known to exist as I stated earlier on this thread with pictures of my latest one. I got this one home about the time you and Malcolm were in Holland. If you go back one page you can read all about it. I can't wait to get this one up and running to see if it really does have the 9 MPH high gear in it. Have you ever took yours out on the road and tried high gear? According to the books the Industrials are suposta go 9 MPH.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Joe,

Regarding the industrial GP on steel wheels lying in that yard, it has been "orchardised" judging by the low seat and steering wheel, that low rear platform and the extended brake pedals.  This style is very like my 48 inch ohv GP.  I don't regard this as being original Massey do you?

I think I am right in saying that MH marketed the 48 inch tractors as orchards in their own right with the availability of special orchard mudguards (FENDERS!!!!)

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

John,

I'm thinking your right on the Orchards just having fenders when they left the factory. For some reason I think this lowering of the platform is a "California" thing possibly was done by someone specializing in Orchard equipment?? There are several roaming around out there that look to be very similar in this aspect and If I am right they all originated in California. I don't think it was a Massey thing as I've never seen any literature on anything like this for Orchard Tractors.

I don't know why Massey didn't make them all this way it would be much easier to get on and off but I guess it wouldn't work very well when using the PTO.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

John,

Here is another thing that I believe may be a " Californian modification" as all the tractors I've seen this on were from California. I think this is a really great update from the poor factory tin clamp ball joints that all seem to be worn out and sloppy not to mention make it turn harder.

This moves the pivot point about 4 inches ahead witch would give you a much more leverage advantage on making it turn easier. Take note of the longer tie rod link coming off the steering gear pivot compared to what you normally see. Don't know why they didn't think of this earlier. Have you ever come across this in your travels?

Wow!! I see the Reply buttons are back!!

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Joe - I agree with you about this California thing.  The orchard GP I bought at Dome Valley was reputedly out of California.

Re the steering modification it looks good for purpose - one for the Design Faults thread??

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Made a little more progress on 303038-50 last weekend, finally got the NOS tires on I found in Michigan last winter. Haven't had much tractor time this year so have to take it when I can get it. I think these tires really look cool on this tractor I was very tickled to find this set of four.....
