RE:Wallis Tractors

Went on a long hunting trip the last couple days and my choice of weapon was a large briefcase of cash but got the job done.... We managed to oust a bear cub from a long hibernation.

As of now this is the second oldest one that I know of but I have heard several others in hibernation may have also been ousted from a long nap.

RE:Wallis Tractors

Joe,

Quite a find - well done!  Thes machines seem to be falling from the skys this week.  Are they really so numerous???!!!

Do tell us a bit more about its condition.  Does it need much doing to it to get it running?

John

RE:Wallis Tractors

Well done and congratulations Joe,

Just shows what you can find when you send family members out "hunting", I presume this is the one you mentioned to me last year when I visited your place?? Maybe you need to send him off again and who knows he may even come back with a "bear" next time.

Anyway looks like it will not take too much to get it running, you will just have to pick a few parts from your "spares department" before she plays a tune. Very good to see the stamped number on the timing cover matching the serial number on the brass plate.

I am sure you will be driving this one before I get to drive mine, I will be heading to the parts department for a few more times than you will before I hear a tune.

Malcolm.

RE:Wallis Tractors

Thanks for the other pictures Joe, I wish it was not so cold here yesterday I could have looked at it a bit more.

It looks like it will require some engine work to get into running order. But joes the man for the job I guess. Nice to have another wallis in Minnesota!

As for the number of existing Cub JR's I have a list of 33 existing that I know of, some complete some not so complete. They are definitely and interesting tractor and hav a lot of unique characteristics not seen on other 1916-1917 model tractors from other brands!

RE:Wallis Tractors

Malcolm/John/and others:

I am sure this will not be a pour in gas, set mag, and give it a couple flops situation here by any means. Although this is a very good looking tractor in the pictures it has been sitting for about 50 years and will need the usual heart, lung and intestine exam. As you can see in the two pictures Tom posted, I first have to evict the roadents and their used furniture and bedding to get a good evaulation of what work there is to be done.

The crankcase has about 6 inches of nesting in it and the piston sleeves look quite rusty, I haven't pulled the valve cover to see what it looks like but judging from what I see in the bottom of the engine I am afraid to look.

The weather here is cold and wet so I am in no hurry to stand out there and get sick, so will have to wait.

Here are a couple pics I snapped through hand holes.

RE:Wallis Tractors

This tractor has some unique things, don't know if it is because it is because it is very early or if someone has modified it??

Here is a picture of the Starting crank and coggs on the belt pulley, Never seen one like this yet has anyone else?

RE:Wallis Tractors

Here is the early version of the easy fix to keep the frame from twisting. The later Cub jrs had the cast bolt on tryangle braces with adjusting bolts.

Here is the early type bolt on exaust/intake heat exchanger that Tom noticed in about the first 3 seconds he laid eyes on it.

RE:Wallis Tractors

This tractor has the early oil filter system very rarely seen, I believe it is because they were not very good so they dropped it from production and as far as I know they did not even use a filter system until the Model Ks were introduced.

RE:Wallis Tractors

This tractor also has the original Shoe Clutch and has not been changed to the later Disc Clutch. It is very oily with no mouse nest or rust so that is a good sign in this area.
