RE:Massey signs

John,

The sobering MF black and white sign was made in about 1973 for the Ski Whiz snowmobiles. I think they made it black and white so it would show up better in the snow. Here is a picture of a couple snowmobiles on steroids the second one in the line is showing the black and white MF decal same as your sign.

RE:Massey signs

joe,

Thanks for the info on the B and W sign - interesting to pick up these odd facts.

No snow here except up on the mountains behind us.  Just incesant rain and storms for the last 8 weeks with much of S England still flooded.

Here'san old two sided MH sign in metal which I picked up from an aged dealer up in Scotland.  It's the only one of its type and size I have seen.

Here is another M-H British Dealers sign, also a photograph of the same sign pictured in the sales literature, showing a very nice ornate metal bracket for the sign to be fixed to the side of the dealers  wall.

RE:Massey signs

John recently posted his red and cream quite common square British Dealer tin sign, note the <M-H> in the centre is painted red.
One day whilst at an auction I looked at a M-H sign and quickly passed as the condition looked grim to me, something called me back when it was being sold and I bought it very cheaply thinking it was just a poor example of what I already had in my collection. When back home it was put in the shed and not even looked at, one day I thoguht I had better put it on the wall and securing it in place realised it was different and the colours were reversed to the common sign, so here are two side by side, if it did have cream on at one time then it is all gone now, but interesting to note the difference on the <M-H> and outer lettering.

Back to Ferguson today with this tin sign - a bit rusted around the edges but still very nice.

RE:Massey signs

For today here is a slightly smaller version of an early M-H sign which John started this thread with, the blue background texture on these signs is interesting, almost like sand applied to the wet paint to give it a rough texture, this sign has been looked after very well during it's life in Ontario and not seen too much weather out doors.

I have seen several of these signs over the years on my travels and always thought they were the same size, until John bought his just 15 miles from me and when I went to collect it found it would not fit into my van and I had measured my own before I went, so had to go back with a larger van.

RE:Massey signs

This sign I had in agood few years ago from France.  The French MH people had a quite differnt style of lettering to the UK and North America.

RE:Massey signs

Here is another very large UK sign, about 8 feet long and 3 feet high, a wooden frame covered with hardboard and hinged in the centre, so they fold back, were they used as corner signs for a show trade stand? John and I located two on one of our trips to Scotland several years ago from an old M-H dealer.

RE:Massey signs

Here's a nice round MH sign about 2 feet in diameter.  Tin and furled round at the edges.  Quite a bold sign I think.

On the right is a floor tile from the MF Tower block offices in Banner Lane Coventry, now demolished.

RE:Massey signs

Here  is what I think is one of the most tasteful of the larger MF dealer's signs - a nice combination of design and colouring.
