My first experience of a M-H combine as a young boy was riding on the bagging platform seat of a M-H 780 Special watching dad bagging barley and sending the tied up sacks down the chute onto the ground, even then I questioned why send it down to the ground to pick up by hand again onto the trailer. Running on TVO or paraffin it was a lovely sound and smell from the exhaust, especially when the drum swallowed a lump.
It wasn't long after that a 780 Special tanker was at work alongside the bagger, many of them eventually getting converted to tanker models.
So the 780 Special is the M-H combine I have a soft spot for. Here are some photo's of tanker version at last years Newark indoor tractor show, displayed with a period Ransome's of Ipswich "corn cart" as we called them here in Lincolnshire.
