RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Hi John, those are some fine looking 25's!  We can see you slowly converting over to the old stuff. Pretty soon gary will have to come and pick up all your push button tractors!

can I ask what is wrong with your red 25 carb?

also Malcolm thanks for the brochure scans. I can't say I have seen that 25 brochure before. That is a very nice piece you have.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Hi Tom.   I don't see my collection of the "push button" tractors getting any smaller, or going to Gary.  ;-)   Still expanding on that end as well.

Here are a couple of photos of what is left of the carb on my Styled 25.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

John,

Great to see you enjoying this 25 thread with added interest in your 25's.

If I was you I would rebuild that carburetor, the cast iron ones for the styled 25's and Pacemaker / Challengers are very hard to find, the air pipe end is made to take the rubber pipe connection. The brass Kingston's on the unstyled 25's are a lot more common. Find a brass one and swap the parts to your original cast iron carb, you can get new floats etc for the rebuild.

I was lucky to have a spare one on my shelf for this last styled 25 rebuild, it came from the same farm in Warwickshire as my styled 25 on F&H rubbers.

A good welder would also put you an end in your bottom oil filter, had some like that here too.

I enjoyed your green 25 story and it looks a very nice tractor.

Malcolm.

Okay, here is the deal - if I could find a Wallis or anything else that would start like that old man's Wallis started from the Wallis thread that Joe posted,  I could see myself having one.  I could not believe that guy grabbed the crank hit about three times and it started!!  I doubt if he had f ive pounds of lift behind him but it started right up!!

Nothing worst than working up a sweat just to get it started!  But then again...

"Push-Button"

LOL!!

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Well Gary I think one of these days you are going to end up with one!

Our OK starts up nice like the one in the video, most of the time. The K on the other hand is very temperamental if it has been sitting. I think that the Kingston carb has a lot to do with it, or maybe it's just the luck of the draw on what kind of character the tractor has?
you can do a lot of work to make them better.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Malcolm and Joe, I think it is a great idea to list all known U frame Wallis and Masseys even if they no longer exist, in my search for red 25 numbers I have found any thing from complete tractors to just the U frame,I have a Wallis 20 30 U frame that has been made into a feed trough and I have the matching engine block so is this still an existing tractor or not? I also have this 20 30 number 56633 and plan to rebuild it.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

I do hope someone takes on the listing of incomplete and lost tractors providing the serial numbers are available, it will compliment David Parfitt's excellent comprehensive record of surviving examples available for everyone to see on his website for pre 1930 tractors,   www.steel-wheels.net  Check out the pre 1930 register page, you will be amazed at the content of this excellent site and amount of surviving Wallis and early M-H tractors on the register.

Today's contribution to the styled 25 discussion is the F&H rear wheel hubs on the rubber tyred tractors, for years I have often wondered why the hubs look different and much larger on the original UK import tractors to the ones I have seen in Western Canada.
Recently discussing this with Graham he came up with the answer, what makes the hubs look smaller is the fact they have been machined to hold the wheel weight in position, something we have not seen on UK tractors and apparently he has experienced this with I-H tractors too.

Attached side view photo of my tractor  and one of Graham's photo's showing the wheel weight in place on a Canadian tractor.

Anyone else noticed this?

Malcolm.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

I have taken a picture of the IH F&H wheels to show the difference in hub size, these are identical to the 25 wheels appart from the spline shaft fitting. I had not noticed this on the 25s until Malcolm brought it to my attention, so I will be taking note of hub sizes as I collect serial numbers this year.
