RE:Massey Harris #2

Also does anybody know where this #2 went after the auction? I heard texas at the sale but it has just disapeared! I think I have been able to piece together some history on it.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

Thanks for that press cutting.  Although I have several press cuttings etc of this celebrated (!!) No. 2 tractor I hadn't seen this one.  I'll try and download it for my archives

As for the Yuma No. 2 that supposedly went to Texas I have no idea what exactly happened to it.  Wasn't it supposed to have gone to a museum?  We did in fact bid on that tractor but were not even the under bidder.  Just as well we now have two far better tractors which have not suffered a cracked block as that one had.

As the old saying here goes "there's always another to come out of the woodwork!"

RE:Massey Harris #2

I have been looking at the parts for these tractors again in preparation for a little move and noticed that besides the transmission gears the pinion gears are different between these two tractors. one has a 13 tooth pinion and the other is 11. So John and Malcolm do you guys happen to know what yours are?

Here is a picture of the 11 tooth

All loaded up for the trip tomorrow!

It was actually pretty nice outside today only -5 degrees at the farm after the trees stopped the wind that never quits around here.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

Have just checked our two No 2s and they both have 11 tooth gears,  Presumably a 13 tooth gear would need a different bull (the main wheel gear) gear???  I  wonder what the earlier Parrets had?  Is the one with the 13 tooth gear an older No. 2??

The elder of my two has different front and rear hubs to the younger one and the same as the earlier Parrett - which is how we have concluded that it is the elder one of the two because neither have serial no plates

RE:Massey Harris #2

Just been and checked my No 2 and it has 11 tooth gears. Then went to my Parrett literature and you are correct John they show 13 teeth, wonder why the change????

I will scan some pages and post later for you to see Tom.

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Here are a few scans from the Parrett catalogue which I thought you might find interesting Tom, also another aerial photograph of the factory in Chicago Heights, Illinois and yet another water tower in the photograph.
In the Wallis thread the J I Case tower has been under discussion and now this one, this makes me wonder as collectors are we missing another piece of great  company history here, who has a water tower in their collection??????

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Malcolm,

The MH and Parrett towers look so alike that it is uncanny!  Maybe supplied by the same firm.  One of these certainl would be a nice item standing by one's main tractor shed.
We should have made an offer for that one in Racine when we were viewing it in 1997.

How about you No. 3?  How many teeth on that pinion cog?

John

RE:Massey Harris #2

Thank you guys for the information on your tractors.  Another thing to note is the Parrett malcolm posted is the later model H with the internal teeth on the bull gear. I am going to check on the Parrett Model E and see what that one uses.
The picture I posted of the gear is the newer tractor of my two massey's. the other one has the 13 tooth so maybe that is why all the teeth are worn off!

Here is a picture today of unloading the #2. My friend Joe is going to make some new frame rails and a few other parts for both of these tractors. We were thinking this was probably the first time this tractor had been picked up by a crane since it left the factory!
so with any luck soon I will actually need the motors I have been looking for.

also john, if you have a chance I sure would like to see pictures of your different hubs. Mine look the same but maybe I am missing some details?

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom - yes will get you some photos of the hubs.  It was Malcolm prowling round my tractors a year or so ago who first spotted the difference and we made our conclusions
