RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Here is also something you don't see everyday, an oirginal factory PTO shield for a GP. Of all my tractors I only have two of them. One has been on for years and the other I picked up at an auction in Wisconsin where there is still a Massey Harris GP buried under ground in the drive way and has been there for many years. And will probebly remain there for ever....

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

When designing the GP many man hours went into it and alot of money was spent to come up with the perfect Tractor, but they chinzed on the Serial tags. I believe the first seven hundered GPs that were made got leftover serial tags from the Massey Harris 20-30 that is the reason for the bottom of the tag being cut off.

I have seen this on many early GPs I would like to track down when the last Massey Harris 20-30 tag was used and the first real GP tag was produced with the width stamped on the tag.

Here are two of my early tags with the cut off bottom and a 3rd of what they should look like now.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Wow it was even higher than I thought. Here is a picture of one of our members tractors with Serial # 300720 anyone else out there got a higher number than that on a cut off Serial tag?

John:

After looking at more pictures of your Industrial I noticed your tractor aslo has the Stub Nosed rear axle I wonder what the reason for this Stub Nose is????

Also here is a picture of one of my latest ebay purchases, it is an Industrial with the same cast drop housing as yours. I need to find a microscope to see if I can read the Serial number on this tractor as it could quite possibly even be your tractor in it's younger years. But if not at least we would know they made more than one Industrial Flathead tractor.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Here is another weak spot on the early GPs that thy changed on the New 1936 Model. The early GPs had a problem with the Cast drop housings cracking so they beefed them up a bit by putting an extra rib in the casting.

First picture is of the early type verses the new style with rib.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Another great improvment they made on the New 1936 Model was to make it easier to put the PTO in gear right from the drivers seat rather than trying to sneek between the wheels to pull up the lever and lock it into it's holder to keep it on.

I don't know what they were thinking on the earlier version as it surely wouldn't have been a very safe method of engaging the PTO. Not to mention impossible from the drivers seat.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Well what all did they have pre 1936 that ran on PTO besides a belt pulley (which you would be off the seat anyways, right?)?  Just askin' cause I don't know old implements.

Pulverator plow?  What year was that?

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Just looking through some of my GP stuff and came across this Brochure from 1932 and noticed the Industrial on the front left top is the same exact picture as the Post Card picture I have it even has M.H 1538 in the lower right corner so I know it is the same picture. Also here is another picture I got off ebay some time back that is also on the front cover. It is dated 10/11/32 and equiped wiith Cushion Pressure Tires.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Joe - I found your old post showing the pulverator plow in 1930.

Besides you can't really put a belt on a GP because of the rear wheels.

Drew:

You are alive!! I thought I was going to have to show you another shed full of stuff to get you excited!!!

There were more PTO Implements than you would think, like a Binder, Potato digger, Mower, Pulverator Plow,Rear street Broom, not to mention the PTO had to be engaged to make the Power lift work.
