RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

I challenged our local MF dealer to try and find me an operators manual but today he reported that he has drawn a blank.

This really is proving to be an elusive machine as I can't find any info on it from either AGCO UK or AGCO France, but I still have the English man who bought it for me in France on the case and he lives there and speaks French.  Fortunately I do have a copy of a sales brochure for it.

Patience is a virtue in these matters and at least one has the time to eat and think MASSEY produced FOOD!

John:

I found what you need!!! A mate for your tiller!! and it is right here in Minnesota close to Steve so he could pick it up easily for you.  Ebay Item # 111044481450

You should buy this so you have a His & Hers tiller and can really do some serious gardening...

Joe

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

Joe,

That's quite a find in N America.  I never had any evidence that they were marketed over there.  Maybe you could get your local MF agent to check??

I had been told that the engine was a Kawasaki.  This confirms it for which I am grateful.  I still have had no info on these machines from AGCO in UK or France, or MF dealers

I trust that you have now passed this on to Steve.  It's just the machine for his tomato patch as he wanders into his senior years!

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

John:

Are you sure your tiller was made in France?? I think it was made in Japan and is a spin-off from a Honda tiller. This would explain the Kawasaki engine on yours and the one I found. If you get a chance to look closely at some of your castings or pieces on your machine you may find "Made In Japan" as they are usually pretty good at stamping things in about a hundred places with "Made In Japan" on other things they make there.

Here is some pictures I found of a Honda 600, either Massey copied Honda or Honda copied Massey or Honda made them for Massey as they are very similar. Yours has the optional forward and reverse so maybe yours is the higher priced model. Leave it to Honda to cheapen it up a bit. What do you think?

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

John:

Now after looking at more pictures of the one I found I believe I found something to confirm my theory. If you look closely in this picture just below the Massey Ferguson I believe it says "Made In Japan" but it is not a clear enough picture to really tell but I believe that is what it says. Does yours have this decal?

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

Joe,

That definitely looks like made in Japan.  Mine has no made in Japan markings as far as I can recall but I'll have another look when the snow drift melts from the doors of that shed.

We had previously assumed made in France or Italy because we found it in France and the Italians are pretty good at this sort of machine.  The Kawasaki engine figures with Japan of course.

Have you sold  the idea on to Steve?

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

John - It seems that snow drift has been putting serious holds on the statuses on some of these posts!

Wishing you warmer weather and sunshine.

RE:MF 258 Agriculteur

I have now found out definitely from some old MF hands that the Agriculteur was made in Japan by Iseki and was only for the Frenh market - so another bit of history in the bag but I am still trying hard to find an operators manual for it.

No photo to put with this post so it can go!!  Gary and Joe - what's going on - I have people phoning me asking what's going on?
