Govenor for 44-4 W/ Cont 260/277 Engine

I have a 1949 44-4 with a 260/277 engine.  I reworked the engine during a restoration a couple of years ago. I cleaned and checked the governor while in the engine.  It appeared to be free and smooth working?? The governor has been balky and hangs up every since I got it running.   I have concluded the best thing to do is have a complete replacement available to fix the issue.  Since the paint is new I will want to go in and out on the first pass of repair to minimize the damage.  So I do prefer new parts but will probably end up with used ones.  To that end I found in the 2014 Steiner Tractor catalog page 480 a replacement governor for Ferguson and Massey Ferguson about 20 different models. TE20, TO20, TO30, 35, F40, 50, 135, 150, 202, 204, 230, 235, 245, MF INDUSTRIALS 20C,  30B, 2135, 2200, 2500, 4500, (ALLWITH CONTIENTIAL GAS OR 3 CYL PERKINS GAS ENGINES.  This replaces the following Massey parts 529737M91 & 738440M91.  This governor is a new ball type?? a note says it will replace the old fly weight type.   I wonder if there is a crossover to my 44?  I checked with Steiner and they stated they had no knowledge of anyone using one in a 44.  I do not have knowledge of the above engines to evaluate the possibility.  I do like the new design and would hope it might just work.

Looking for help from the fellow Massey Collectors to consider the possibility of this governor working on my 44

Thanks,

Mike Jones

RE:Govenor for 44-4 W/ Cont 260/277 Engine

I have a 44 Diesel with a Continental 260 engine. My problem is I have diesel getting into the sump. I think it may be the seal between the pump and the block that has gone.

Any ideas please.

Alan

I have had problems like that also . I have removed the little lift pump on side of  injection pump . It is attached with two 7/16 head bolts   Take lift pump off and let hang away from main pump with  fuel in tank gravity will cause it to leak if seal is bad  Seal no. is CR 4231  Hope this helps Dennis.
