RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Hello Alan,

Just thought I would see how you are progressing with your wrench list? hope you are making progress and still getting input from other MCA members about their wrenches.

I will be haeding off this weekend to start getting the site marked out and set up for Carrington Rally next weekend, so I will be away from the computer for several days now, bring the sunshine with you from Norfolk if you come up for a day to Carrington. I understand there is an early M-H reaper in the auction Sasturday if you need another implement project

Malcolm.

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Hello Malcolm,

I got a lot of information from George & Barbara Smyth just recently but I haven't had time to add it to the list yet.
I am going to see John in the early part of next month. He has kindly said I can take picture of his wrenches. I expect he might have some other things that are M-H related to show me.I'm looking forward to visiting him.
I will be at Carrington but not on Saterday. I leave you to buy the Reaper.I'll Bring the sun with me. We have got plenty in Norfolk at the moment.

Alan

REhMassey-Harris Wrenches

Today Alan called in to see me and my collection for the day.  He was on his way across to Ireland on holiday.  A solid day of Massey talk resulted culminating with a great evening meal in a local pub where we duly treated our better halves for their tolerance!

Besides seeing my collection a principal objective of his visit was to look in detail at the Massey spanners (wrenches!) that I had collected over the years.  It seems I have qute a few he had not come across and he was busy photographing them.

He has done a lot of prepartory work in pulling together a comprehensive listing of Massey spanners and his ultimate objective of preparing a document or book on the subject has clearly taken off but he still has a long way to go to track them all down.  It is a truly Herculean task which can only be achieved with a lot of effort and over a considerable period of time.

He does need contacts and information and photos of spanners so I would encourage all out there to try and help him with photos and infos and contacts for people who have spanner collections.  I would particularly ask if Australian and S African MH enthusiasts can help as Alan wants to give a comprehensive world wide coverage to the subject as far as is practically possible

John

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Speaking of tools ...  Hi Alan!!

Some of us had the to opportunity to see an unusal wrench or tool or whatever sell at Tom Patterson's auction this past summer.  I could not find anyone who might have known what it is!!  Attached are some pics that I finally uploaded for your review.  Hopefully, someone out there will know what it is and how it was used.  It has the usual MH markings on it.

I think the part number reads X776 or X77??

Just curious!!  Thanks

Gary

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Gary:

Looks to me to be a tool for lifting a hot pot off a Massey Harris stove........

What do you think Malcolm?? Do you have any parts books on your stove that lists this number??

Could also be a tool for carring two Massey Harris milk cans at once.... But you had better of made a good breakfast first on the Massey Harris stove or you may tyre quickly....

Either way it is a very cool addition to your collection!!!

Joe

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Joe,

I like your guesses.  They are all possibilities.  I would like to point out the it isn't 100% symetrical.  The "hook" on one side is slightly larger than the other.  Maybe casting differences but they looked different enough to mention.

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Hi Gary,
Could well be like Joe suggests. I haven't got those numbers on my wrench list.
Nice looking wrenches on the bench in one of the photos

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

A very interesting piece, sorry Joe I don't have any stove parts lists, just sales brochures.

I wondered if it is something to do with holding chain links, horse gears etc??

Alan now has a challenge in finding the parts list to match the number!!!!
I know I have seen the X prefix before but cannot remember what it was in relation to???
Maybe Tom can chime in here and remember all his parts prefixes and numbers??

A very nice piece of Massey history and curiosity, thanks for the pictures and detail, again something we would not of known about and never seen before had it not been for this website. Keep them coming that is what this site is all about, broadening our knowledge on "all things Massey"

Did you add it to your collection Gary?

Malcolm.

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

Gary:

Are you surre the part number on your mystery part is an X or a Y?? I found a part on a Number 15 Massey Harris cultivator that has the part number Y774 that fits your discription of what you posted earlier. Here are some pictures I took of the book, what do you think??

After seeing this I don't believe this is a wrench.

RE:Massey-Harris Wrenches

I would say that you have the winner Joe!  That does look like the part.  (I was there in person to see it).  Good job hunting!
