New Guy and Challenger

Hello to all, I am new to Massey Collectors but not to Massey's.  I am a retired farmer from Russell, Kansas and used Massey equipment in my farming. I have had my 1938 Massey-Harris Challenger Twin Power restored that my father bought new in 1938

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Welcome to the MCA!  That tractor in the photo looks great!

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Hello and welcome to the MCA from the Hoosier State! Sharp looking Challenger you have there. What other Massey's do you have? If I may ask?

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Thanks for the nice comments.  I only have the Challenger, a #3 tractor plow, & a No. 33 sickle mower left & in the process of restoring the plow and mower.  Sure do wish I would have kept some of my other pieces which at one time we had on the farm, a Wallis tractor the 4WD GP, then my 44, 65, 1100, 1155, super 27 combine, 410, 760 also had a No 1 baler and also a No. 10, and a 880 5-16 pull type plow. I have also restored our hopper cooled motors, a drag saw, a couple of cars, two military vehicles.  I hope to attend the Massey expo in Ottawa, Kansas in 2020 and meet a lot of you guys.

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Sounds like you had some neat equipment. I've always liked the style of the 410s for one reason or another.

Truth be told I too am a fairly new member (joined late fall of last year) so I'm still getting to know everybody and I too hope to meet some of the members on here at some of the shows.

Here is my tractor, it is a 1954 Massey Harris 55 gas bareback. I have another tractor, but its not Massey related.

  Cheers,

 elsasser7122,

Hi and welcome to the MCA website! you could spend many days looking back on older posts and kind of get a good feel for the people you will meet on here and at the shows.

Very nice looking Challenger, what is the Serial number? Do you still have the original sales receipt? I really like the rear tires, are they the original?

Do you know what the serial numbers were for the MH GP and Wallis you had years ago? It would be fun to see if we could find out where they ever ended up or if they still exist.

Joe

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Congratulations and welcome aboard.  Thanks for stepping up and introducing yourself to MCA.  We need more folks like you. Good luck in meeting some of the other 'crazy' folks who collect Massey equipment, you will enjoy them.

Great looking Challenger.  Hope to meet you somewhere down the road.

RE:New Guy and Challenger

to catch up on a couple of questions asked.   I do not have any of the serial #'s on the Wallis or the GP, I will have to get the one for the Challenger as it is in my building on a farm.  The tires are the second set, got put on new when we got a 44 so the Challenger  got retired to light work, they where real good yet and I wanted to save the closed bar type.
Another story on the Challenger, my grandmother bought my dad and his brother each a new tractor in 1938, The dealer took them to Hutchinson, Ks, where Massey had a branch warehouse, which was about 100 miles from the farm, got there very early and then they drove them home, running only one at a time and then  switched off, and ran the second one, pulling one. got home before dark, good way to save gas and money back in 1938. The dealership is still there, now the 4th generation is coming in, the 3rd generation, is a very good friend on mine, we went thru all grades of school together.  The farm was 1/2 mile from the dealer so I would help out every winter in the shop. Dealership is located in Milberger, ks, about 16 miles south of Russell.  My uncles tractor is stored at one of his buildings, still in it's original condition.

RE:New Guy and Challenger

Hello Larry,

Welcome to the Massey Collectors website and what an interesting story you have shared there with us.

Well done on the restoration of your Challenger it looks superb and hope it gives you many more years of enjoyment, being an original family tractor and the stories of how it got from Hutchinson to your farm in 1938 is superb history and great you have now documented it.
Today so much history gets lost or diluted as items we collect pass onto new owners and they move around this much smaller world.

Some photo's of your uncles tractor would be great to see when you have time.

It's all a wonderful story and memories, I am sure you will have a lot more stories to tell us on working the M-H tractors and implements over the years, or even repairing them at the dealers.

Thank you.
