RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Well, I didn't manage a Christmas Day start-up, but I was able to make the 1200 mile round-trip and get my GP home on Friday (left home 3:30 am and returned home with the tractor at 11:00 pm...). Here are a couple of shots of the latest addition after driving it off the trailer at its new home. As you can see, it was a beautiful day here, and no snow on the ground.

Hi everyone and seasons greeting from down under. Been 100degF for a few days now, so definitely no snow here, few large ice crystals falling from the sky at times. JWB, beautiful GP - we would love to see one in real life. There were none imported here, only New Zealand. I Didn't do a Christmas start up, but everyday since starting most tractors. Santa did bring new tyres for my 102 Senior. Happy New Year to all and may all our New Years resolutions be - Collect more Masseys. Thanks for everyones input. Its good reading. Buck

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Hi Buck.
Not much chance of starting anything here this morning it's -37c (about the same in Fahrenheit) although Friday we did get up to 0%c (32F) which was a welcome break.
Hope you and all Massey Collectors had a great Christmas and all the best for  2014.

Graham.

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Graham,

Will the tractors physically not actually start at these low temps or is it owner reluctance to have a go??!!

Whilst we here cannot appreciate these low temps the U frames did have the little taps on the manifolds for injecting petrol or ether to aid cold starting.  And some farmers would surely have had jobs for them such as grinding corn in winter???  We find that "Easy Start" (or other equivalents) is a great aid to low temp starting.  Then there is the old diesel engine aid - a lighted rag held over the air intake.  This was vcommon practice here in the early days of diesels in the 40s and 50s.

If it is indeed possibleto start them then it should be easier these days with modern low viscosity oils and anti freezes?

Just curious.

Hey John,

Are you going to spend the rest of your life grading your driveway!?!?!?  The tractor looks great!!  Glad it found a good home!!

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

John,
I was referring to the older hand crank tractors.
The tractors we use on the farm have engine block heaters and ether cans mounted on the engine that spray directly into the manifold operated with a push button from the drivers seat. The diesels do become a lot more reluctant to start when it gets colder than -25c. We have a diesel burning space heater that can be a big help sometimes but a insulated heated shed is the best by far starting aid. It is very hard on a machine starting it in these temperatures, there can be some painful noises when it is down in the -30s.
So if you really need to start something there are ways to do it.

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Graham, you're going to give that poor tractor an Ice Cream headache!!! Poor thing spent most of it's life basking in the California sun and sand and now it looks like it is shivering to death.. Quite a climate change for it..Joe

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Joe,

Just getting it climatised to the Canadian Winters, it's here now so it's going to have get used to it.
Our 15-27 managed to get it's self into the shed after over 50 years of Saskatchewan winters out in the open and one winter out in Manitoba.

RE:XMAS DAY Start Up!

Although it was close to -20c on Christmas Day we took the 44 Special for a 1/2 mile drive as we now have the garage slightly above freezing and had no problem starting it.
