RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom,

I measured both the No 2 and 3 drawbars tonight.

Jim is correct on his measurements of 41 X 3 X 1 inch for my No 2 and they must of been cutting down on metal when they got to producing the No 3's, they are the same length and width but only 7/8th inch deep.

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Well this weekend while out snowmobiling a friend of mine sent me some pictures of a buda engine that might work in my tractor. The length and mounting pattern appears to match my crankcase but I would like to see if John, Malcolm, or Jim could measure the height of their engine blocks from the crankcase mounting surface to the mounting surface for the head for a comparison.
Thanks! With any luck one of these might just run in the next decade!

RE:Massey Harris #2

Tom the measurement from the top of the crankcase to top of cylinder block is 10.5 inches, hope you have found a suitable Buda at last, those HTU's are very scarce, please post a photograph of what you hope to use.
Any up dates on the work on the frames?

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris #2

Thanks Malcolm for measuring your engine block for me.

We have found several buda engines but none that are an HTU. This one is almost the same size. the length is the same as the HTU but has a shorter stroke and a slightly shorter cylinder block. I still want to make engines blocks and heads but untill that gets done I will keep looking for an original.

I was told yesterday that there was some funny looking channel irons sitting next to my tractor yesterday so the frame rails must be bent now. I will try to get him to take some pictures for you guys.

Nice progress.  Also, a nice big clean shop!

RE:Massey Harris #2

Somebody has way more resources than what can be found around here...  :-)

RE:Massey Harris #2

Well I just got home from Albany. We didnt get as much done as I thought but the air hammer didnt quite have enough power to install a rivet without reheating it. So when the front axles are finished I will bring them back home and have them riveted in Fargo where my journey began today picking up the rivets at Larson Welding. They just rolled out one of the latest projects an is headed bck to Rollag soon.

I am glad I have several friends around here in the manufacturing business so I get alot of help from them on my projects.  They have been bugging me about getting the bull gears made soon but there is only so much money I can afford to spend on a tractor in a short time. I brought home several smaller castings to get ready to re-cast, once I figure out how.

RE:Massey Harris #2

I forgot to talk about my last picture. It shows some paint that was found under the head of some rivets that held the corner bracket to th fenders. It shows a brighter red than the frame showed. I really think these tractors were Dark Red / Maroon frames and brighter Red sheet metal.

Oh and maybe someday my busted up crankcase will look like this instead of the big picture window it currently has.

RE:Massey Harris #2

I thought I would revive this thread with this super photo that I have just acquired of the Massey-Harris No 2 tractors being manufactured at MH's Weston, Ontario, Canada plant.  About 1920.  Plenty of spare parts lying around for Tom!
