RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Malcolm:

Very interesting to read  the figures!! hard to believe you put on that many miles just plowing a field but if you think about it the amount of land that the small 10-12 inch bottoms are actually covrering you get more done with a push mower mowing your lawn.

As long as we are back on the subject of the Cubs, here is something I was going to bring up some time back but it got put on the back burner.

I was always curious as to why most Cubs you see have the quick hitch on them, I always thought it was for plowing or field work. Turns out it was for Threshing, Who would have ever guesed that?? Not me!!!

Here is an ad I found for the Buller Coupler and also an article put out by the Hillsboro Star Journal June 17th 2009 wich I find very interesting.

Malcolm:

Here is the best part about this Buller Coupler post.... I now have something for you to keep your eye out for at the swap meets as I think in the near future you will have a Cub Jr in your collection and will be needing one of these.

I was walking through the Swap meet at Le Seuer last year and came across this Buller Coupler, it was a steal at the big price of $5.00!! I was even more excited when I got it home and set it up to the hitch on the Cub Jr, it is an exact match with the holes in the hitch. It was like it was made for this tractor, what do you think?

RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Thanks Joe,  that is great information you have turned up on the Buller Coupler fitted to the Cub's, so from that my tractor was not used for threshing and must of been pulling a plow and breaking sod together with other farm work in the wide open space of Montana during it's working life. It would be so nice to know more of our tractors history, so much gets lost over the period of time.

Well you always find a bargain in MN Joe, I have not made it to Le Sueur swap meet yet, but intend to one of these years and I bet when I do get there I will walk round all day and find NOTHING. I know both Tom and yourself have found a few interesting Wallis items there over the years.

I look forward to checking out the Cub Junior Buller Coupler next time we visit you for strawberries and cream!!!

Malcolm.

RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Well Joe I know I introduced you to this photograph at a Massey Banquet several years ago,  I think you almost swallowed the photograph before your food and recall you did not  have time to eat much that evening.!!!!!
Anyway after all those years I have never come across any one who can tell us anything about this Wallis CUb Junior, it is one of these I am looking for to fill the gap in my collection and it's taking a bit of finding.

I hope someone on here can tell us more about this special tractor pictured at work somewhere in UK in  the British Cub Junior sales brochure. especially the type of engine fitted to this tractor, it looks so different to the unit we are so familiar with in the tractors preserved today.

Here is the rest of the British Cub Junior brochure, I beleive the engine in that tractor pictured above  is a smaller version of the Cub engine with two individual cylinder blocks. The KW 4 cylinder magneto shows up well and looks to be driven from the water pump shaft.

Interesting to note the other photographs in the same brochure are of the engine we are familiar with.

Malcolm:

Alot of this early picture stuff just don't make sence as we have found in the past. Like the picture of the Cub jr on the cover of your brochure (First Picture) with the two hand holes close together.

I did some searching on the Ancona company and it seems to keep bringing up boats alot Could this be a boat engine as that is what the Wallis Cub engine was based off.

Also when searching stuff for Wallis for some reason the state of Kansas seems to pop up alot. I think the Wallis tractor was very popular in Kansas years ago and when they could not get parts they needed or get the people at the Wallis factory to cooperate with them they took things into their own hands.

Here is a picture of a Sellers motor car made in Hutchinson, Kansas, it is refered to as the Sellers 35 as the top speed was 35 mph. Take a close look at the engine, sure looks like the one stuffed into the Cub Jr. Could it be possible that the picture in your brochure was taken in Kansas?

I think we need to do some more research on this one.

Joe

RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Thanks Joe, sometimes the pictures tell a different story, maybe the J I Case print room staff of the day did not understand the tractors of their time on the production line. We experience just the same today with one trade not knowing what the other is doing.

Interesting your thought on the Ancona Motor Company and their marine connections, you never know.

I still think the photograph looks to be in more of a British environment, especially the driver of the tractor and backdrop scenery, but who knows it could be Kansas in disguise. I think the engine in the Sellers car is of a different design to the one in the Cub Junior?, could be another twist on the tale Joe and more detective work needed.

For today here is another Cub Junior brochure, again another of the popular small foldout type.

RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Little did I know early March when posting the last Wallis Cub Junior brochures on here that three months later I would be posting these photographs.

Guess from Joe's earlier "comments" he must be able to "read the famous crystal ball" so if any MCA members want their fortunes told then make an appointment with Joe and be careful what you ask for!!!!

Mid March I got an email from fellow collector David Parfitt wondering if a recent advertisement he had seen on the internet was of interest to me, the description was " Cub Jnr frame and wheels". opening the attachment was quick and surprisingly enough there was another tractor lying at the side with engine block and gearbox in the frame, on top of the other frame was the front wheel from this tractor and radiator from one of them, David had not noticed the second tractor. With these tractors being in France he was quickly commisioned to be my interpreter and within a few days the deal was secured.

Thank you David for all your help.

Here are the two photographs as seen on the internet.

RE:Wallis Cub Photograph Dated 1912

Malcolm, Have you got them home yet? We need to see a picture inside the engine to see if the tappet guides are cast in the block.
