RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Nice find Tom,  that tractor really has potential to retain it's well established patina from years of work and excellent owner modifications during it's working life in Western Canada. With tires on the rims and a good cleaning and oiling it will be a very fine original tractor, with some good original paint showing on the tinwork and wheel rims.

I am very pleased to see the original black paint on the hand brake leaver, when I started collecting Massey's back in te 1970's dad always told me the parts painted black on their new 12-20's were clutch and handbrake lever top hand grip, front wheel hub caps, rear wheel nut and lock washer, and the oil filter canister. When I restored my Red Pacemaker he did not give it approval until these were painted black.

Hope you soon have her free and a tune from the exhaust.

Malcolm.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

I got one good day of work in the 25 today. Spent a lot of the day cleaning up the one rusty rear rim. I really would like to tell the person where to go that put fluid in these tires. The rim is in good shape yet thankfully just took a lot of cleaning with wire wheels.

Some more of the extra junk got removed and hopefully the new tires can go on next weekend if they get delivered in time. Also mounted up a belt pulley I had on hand to measure tire clearance.

The new mag will get ordered this week, Working on rounding up the rest of my missing parts. Just realized today I have mismatched front wheels.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

This weekend I was able to get a little bit more work done on the 25. The tires didn't show up yet so they will have to wait until next week. I took out almost everything for the oiling system to clean it up and check over the condition. So far everything looks nice with a little cleaning. The crankcase will get cleaned up next weekend.

One piece that that came with the 25 was this wheel weight. I have never seen another one like it. The design is identical to the F+H wheel weight that is commonly seen but it has no lettering on the outside. On the inside is an <M-H> Casting mark. I would like to see if anybody else has run across one of these before. We only have one so another one would be really nice to get on the tractor.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Tom,

The Massey Harris Wheel weight I believe is for the MH GPs or could have been used on the 25s also. There is a set on a GP I bought a couple weeks ago but have not got it home yet also there is a set on a 1936 GP in Canada. I have always wondered if the "No 32" on the gas tank on this tractor means it is the 32nd overhead valve tractor made? Makes sense to me...

Hi Joe, I was going to call you last night but worked on a snowmobile too late.

Anyway those two GP's have the F+H weights on them. Mine are identical but don't have the lettering on the outside like the F+H.

Hey Joe,

I am not sure but I think that #32 represents a rare experimental model.  Have you looked to see if the word "EXPERIMENTAL" is stamped in the frame?  Could be another MN legend!!  Congratulations on that rare find!!  (tongue is now out of my cheek!)

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Well we got new tires on the 25 today. I wish the rear tires were 45 degree but these will do for now in till somebody starts making a nice looking tire. These are Goodyear 14.9-28 Dura Torque.

My goal was to get the tractor to sit level as that seems to be an issue with a lot of 25's especially the ones with 32" tires.

Yesterday I was also able to pick up an air cleaner, starting tank stands, and a couple small parts. We are going to have new drawbars and seat springs made again if anybody else needs those parts.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

I got a little bit more work done yesterday. All the Pistons are now freed up. There is a slight ridge on the top of the sleeves from wear. There is no rust or pits from being stuck or stuff sitting in the cylinders.
We will have to rebuild the cylinder head with new exhaust valves. The rod bearings are used up or flaking also. This weekend if I get time I will have to measure the crank, sleeves and Pistons to see if we should do more machine work. Saturday we have to make a road trip to pick up a tractor for a friend.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Tonight I stayed late at work to start machining on the new J-pipe from Rosewood Machine. I want to have this one setup for running kerosine so there will be some extra work involved with this J-pipe. So far I only have the holes drilled and reamed for the three holes on the side. It takes some extra thinking and head scratching to find a good setup for machining these castings.

RE:Valve Spring Failure on Massey 25

Now that winter is gone I can start working on the 25 again. The plan was to work on it in the shop this winter but a snowmobile project took up most of my weekends for the last 3 months. It is hard to believe that after only one week all of our snow is gone. Last weekend we were out on the snowmobiles and now there is only snow left in shady areas or in piles.

Today I got to try out the new ridge reamer we bought for this engine. It worked surprisingly well. Now all 4 Pistons are out and ready to be cleaned. We took a few more things off today to be cleaned. Since it was pretty decent I thought I would give the old 25 a cleaning since it never really got washed since we bought it. There was a lot of light sandy soil in everyplace it could gather. Where ever it was used in Saskatchewan must have been very light soil. So the crankcase got cleaned, water jacket, head, and radiator.

Rebuilding some of the parts have been going good this winter. The magneto is done, new valves are being worked on, I got the new exhaust pipe in the mail, and a few other little things are happening. Now there is a bunch more boring cleaning and gasket making before the fun arrives again.

So here's some pictures. First is out snowmobiling last weekend. Next is the Pistons out, and last is after a quick wash outside.
