FERGUSONS. THE HUNDAY EXPERIENCE

Authors: John Moffitt and John Farnworth

ISBN No.09533737 5 4

384 PAGES

Books which record a major tractor and implement collection are few and far between. Some years ago I was privileged to have the late John Moffitt approach me to help prepare a book on his Ferguson collection. John was one of our earliest and most foremost tractor collectors in the UK. His first collection was the Hunday museum which he ran as a commercial enterprise for many years and this was one of our main tractor collections covering many rare and eraly tractors. He then sold it off.

Some years later in "retirement" he decided to establish a Ferguson collection having become fascinated with the life and work of Harry Ferguson. Within just a few years he had created what was probably the world's largest collection of Ferguson equipment from the UK and North America. This was a private museum, but could be visted by appointment and some major events were held there as well. When he asked me to help on the book venture I jumped at the chance and this is the result.

I should add that John was one of our most noteworthy dairy farmers. He followed in his father's footsteps in pioneering many aspects of cattle breeding in the UK. "Hunday" was the name of the dairy herd. Realising he was getting old, John sold off his Ferguson collection a few years before his death to a single buyer and the collection can still be viewed by appointment I understand.

MASSEY TRACTOR DATA BOOK

Author: Keith Oltrogge

ISBN No. 0-7603-0599-4

144 PAGES

This small but valuable book will be best known to those in the USA. It's the only comprehensive listing of M-H tractor serial numbers. Further its pocket sized so you can carry it in your pocket to sales to make sure you know exactly what you are buying. It was prepared by well known M-H guru Keith Oltrogge some years ago. Sadly its now out of print so someone (or perhaps MCA?) needs to get it reprinted.

To the best of my knowledge there is no comparable data book on MF and Ferguson. However in my Massey Legacy Vol. 2 book, previously listed, most of the Ferguson and some early MF serial numbers are listed.

FARM TRACTOR COLLECTIBLES

Authors: 15 contributors

ISBN No. 0-7603-0385-1

159 PAGES

For Massey memorabilia fans I recommend this book. Those of you in the USA will be more familiar with it perhaps. It covers nine major makes of tractor manufacturers each addressed in separate chapters. The Massey chapter has been prepared by Keith Oltrogge - who better??!! His chapter is 12 glorious pages, but even if you are a pure Massey fan it is all interesting and well illustrated material.

MASSEY AT THE BRINK. THE STORY OF CANADA'S GREATEST MULTINATIONAL AND ITS STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE

Author. Peter Cook

ISBN No.0-00-216857-X

288 PAGES

Here's another heavy textbook. It makes up a Massey corporate history trio of Harvest Triumphant, Global Corporation (both previously listed and now this "Massey at the Brink. Written by Peter Cook in 1981 it really carries on the corporate history from where Global Corporation left off and charts out Massey's "difficult" years. Part of his record is the near bankrupt company's deal with international bankers for a 715 million $ rescue plan in July 1981. Peter Cook is a recognised financial journalist.

PETER AND PAULINE AT HOLLYHOCK FARM

Author. R A E Linney

ISBN No. 978-1-905523-94-8

48 PAGES

Today its something for the youngsters. This lovely little illustrated book puts the Ferguson System story into kids language. It was first produced by Harry Ferguson Ltd in 1951 but is exceptionally hard to find as an original. Fortunately it was reprinted two years ago in hard back. I thoroughly recommend it for young ones whose eyes glisten and ears pick up when they encounter TRACTORS!

THE BIG BOOK OF MASSEY TRACTORS

Authors. Robert N Pripps (text) and Andrew Morland (photos)

ISBN No. 13:978-0-7603-2655-8 and 10:0-7603-2655-X

208 PAGES

This big format book is I am sure familiar to most of you in North America, but perhaps is less so around other parts of the world. Despite its title it does take a balanced look at Ferguson and MF tractors as well. High quality large photos are a feature to blend in with the text info.

TELLING SOME TALES

Author: Anna Massey

ISBN No. 978-0-09-179645-7

259 PAGES

Here's something different for those of you interested in following the history of the Massey family down to the present day. This book is by actress Anna Massey who is the daughter of the famous Canadian actor Raymond Massey. She has a direct line of descent from the founder of the Massey company Daniel Massey. The line goes:

Daniel Massey

Hart Massey

Chester Massey

Raymond Massey

Anna Massey

Some of you may remember that at the 150th M-H celebrations at the Ontario Agricultural Museum in 1997 there was a short, stocky gentleman in attendance. He was a later Hart Massey who was a cousin of Anna's and I was privileged to have a long conversation with him. Anna recalls some fascinating tales of her lifetime in this book. In the book she recalls some fascinating tales of her lifetime. My wife bought me a copy and Anna was kind enough to sign it for us.

MASSEY-FERGUSON TRACTOR

Author. Michael Williams

ISBN No. 0 7137 1898 6

128 PAGES

Today's book was one of the earliest substantial hardback British books on Massey history. It was first published in 1987. It was the first to pull together the Bull and Parrett tractor, Wallis tractors, M-H tractors, Ferguson tractors and MF tractors. Each is presented in a balanced way so the title does not entirely reflect the content. It is moderately illustrated in black and white.

FERGUSON. I SVERIGE. 1947-1957

Author: Sture Tufvesson
ISBN No. 91-630-6464-2
316 PAGES

Here is a real gem of a Ferguson book. It's a Swedish book but don't be put off by that. It's very highly illustrated with period black and white photos about the history of the tractor in Sweden, the Swedish Ferguson training school etc. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the book is the fact that in Scandinavia generally there were many adaptions for the tractors to cope with their snowy winters and work in the forests. Well, well worth a read.

Written by an Australian and an American this is a great book if you can find a copy. A very educational read with photos and illustrations.
