FREED FROM BONDAGE

Author: John Major

Issued by Harry Ferguson Ltd. Coventry England

44 Pages

Today a very hard to find little Ferguson booklet. Hard to find no doubt because it used such delicate paper. It's a document with a difference because it features farm case studies of the financial benefits of using Ferguson tractors.

HARRY FERGUSON. A BRIEF HISTORY OF HIS LIFE AND TRACTORS

Author: Massey Ferguson Tractors Ltd. Coventry

This is the only official MF document on Ferguson that I know of. It's a neat little 1993 publication by Massey Ferguson Tractors Ltd. It's a good run through his tractor history.

INTIMATE GRANDEUR. ONE HUNDRED YEARS AT MASSEY HALL.

Author. William Kilbourn

ISBN No. 0-7737-2742-6

161 Pages.

For those interested in the history and "extra-corporate" activities here is a fine read. It's all about the Massey Hall in Toronto. Founded by Hart Massey it was said to have equally good acoustic properties to the very finest opera halls in Europe. For years it was the finest building in Toronto. It was built in 1894.

HARRY FERGUSON. BEFORE THE PLOUGH

Author: Michael Clarke in collaboration with Jack Woods

ISBN No. 978 1 900953 81 4

159 Pages

This will be the last of the Ferguson texts. It was only published last year and is a gripping read about Harry Ferguson's "pre-tractor" life in which he was involved with motor cycles, cars and aircraft such were his immense talents. No one has matched his engineering talents in Massey's history. harry Ferguson was the first Irish man to build and fly his own plane way back at the beginning of the 20th century when aviation was in its infancy.

THE MF 500 ERA. THE TRACTORS, THEIR TIMES AND THEIR IMPLEMENTS

Author: John Farnworth

ISBN No. (awaiting)

+/- 300 PAGES

Today we move to the future! This morning I had through the post the cover proof for my next book which will be published in about one month's time. The red might show up a bit gaudy at this stage of preparation but will be adjusted for the final print. The MF 500 tractor series will be largely unknown to most of you in North America. Here it was MF's response to impending safety regulations of the time. It was their first tractor series with fully integrated safety cabs. The series fell between the MF 100 and MF 200 series. The cabs were highly regarded for driver comfort and today the 500s have become very much a collectors must have item. The 500s were sold widely in Europe across to Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Chapters:

Introduction to the 500 tractors, The cab, MF 500 tractor specifications, Modifications to specifications, Employees' recollections, Turbochargers, ROC tractors, MF implements and machines of the period, Training, MF 500s at work, Survivors, The Polish project, The tractor series after the 500s.

MASSEY'S WALLIS HERITAGE

Authors. John Farnworth and Malcolm Robinson.

To be found in: Ferguson Heritage magazine Issues 38, 39, 40 and 41 of 1996-1997

28 Pages

Well - today is the last day of February so as far as we are concerned over here, then calendar wise it's the last day of winter. Coincidentally I have also come to the end of my bookshelf so this will be the last entry on the "Winter Reading" thread. Hope it’s been of some use to identify all the books around about our favorite subject. I am sure that there are some others that I don't know of so if you know of any then why not put them on here. If there are others then I certainly need them on my bookshelf!! The amount there is to learn about Massey History is vast. There is still plenty out there to document the problem being to create financially viable books because it is a very niche market.

So - my last offering is on Wallis. There have not been any books written about Wallis tractors so far, and indeed it would be difficult to do a financially viable book on them due to the shortage of historic information. However in 2006 myself and Malcolm Robinson decided that we ought to try and do something about it. We therefore prepared a four part series article on the Wallis tractors for the "Ferguson Heritage" magazine. This is the club magazine of "The Friends of Ferguson Heritage" which is our biggest tractor club and encompasses Massey-Harris and Massey Ferguson.

The four parts are contained in Ferguson Heritage Issues 38, 39, 40 and 41 spreading through 1996 and 1997. Copies are still available. The four parts totaled 28 pages of highly illustrated material. The first page of the first part is shown here.

Good reading, enjoy searching for out of print and rare volumes, good luck and have a good MASSEY summer.

RE:Massey Related Books and References

Gary I have sevral of the books that you have listed. I hadn't heard of Harvest Triumphant but it looked good. I managed to find a copy on Alibris which arrived today. I was going to put it on the book shelf until winter but when I flicked though the pages I started reading it and now can't put it down. Thank you for introducing it to me. Alan

RE:Massey Related Books and References

To some of our newer members, I thought I would bring this page back around just to share with some of the people who might not have seen it before.  Although there are newer books out there for the Masseys, we put this list together in 2013 as simple reference to Massey books.  It is not the end-all but some good information you might want to look through in your leisure!

Enjoy

Gary
