RE:Massey Harris Implements.

I found the Massey-Harris trailer brochure this evening.  It's just a single two sided sheet.

One of the reasons that they maybe did not sell well was that MH drawbars are not strong enough to take the weight of the trailer plus the load.  However I  note in the detail of this sheet that they were fitted with a "category II hitch for attachment to the drawbar of the MH 745 tractor and other popular models".  I am not sure what this would have been and why it only refers to the 745 and not both the 744 and 745 - after all far more 744s were made.

Alan - can you throw any light on this having seen one?

Here's an implement that many of you over in N America will not be familiar with.  It is a Massey-Harris trusser used to make low density bundles of straw coming out of threshers. The were made by German company Raussendorf.  Eventually MH offerd the machanism for attachment to the rear of their combines in Europe.  This is a French brochure for the machine.

Here are some photo's of our new MCA member Colin Cooper here in UK, he found these M-H spring tine harrows in the weeds behind my shed earlier in the year, it looks like he has been busy getting them ready for this seasons working events, he even located some new points and replaced every nut and bolt in both harrows also making new skids, as they were almost worn out.
Shame they are being pulled by his J-D H, but that's the tractor the event requested, his nicely restored M-H 22 was there last year.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Here's a few photos of the Dickie Swath Turner I picked up last week. It is known to have been stood in a horse paddock hedgerow for the last 14 years. A 96 year old neighbour of the vendor believed that her grandfather bought it new and it had only ever been used on that farm - but unknown when last used. Unfortunately no serial number plates. Only 1 broken tine too....

As you'd expect all 4 drive gears were seized, but they all have freed off ok. 2 of the stub shafts were seized on the left wheel, but again these have freed off when dismantled. Its amazing what a bit of oil, emery cloth and grease does.... that gear train is now all cleaned up and the stub shafts turn very smoothly :-)

I'll strip and clean up the other wheel before taking it for a trial run. The most frustrating thing is I'm going to have to wait 9 months to try it for real...!

Cheers, Jon.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

I don't think that M-H ever made a trailer for their N American Pony tractors.

The French made a large range of implements for their Pony tractors and this 2 ton capacity tipping trailer was one of them.  Smaller than the British made 3 ton trailer marketed for the 744D, but very useful for the small French farms of the day

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Does anyone have for sale or know where I could get a couple of spare Dickie Swath Turner tines from? (later type - see thread below for pictures)

I've got one missing and I'm expecting a couple to ping off when we start turning hay next year.

Cheers, Jon.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Last weekend at the Newark end of season show a collector I know from Staffordshire bought about 60 in the auction on the Saturday, he is sure they are Divkie and wants a set for himself, the surplus will be for sale.
I will email you his details over the weekend

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Not a Massey- Harris implement but a Massey Ferguson 711 Potato Harvester. I think it was designed by the NIAE ( National Institute of Agricultural Engineers) and then taken over and manufactured by MF. Were they ever sold in North America? Alan

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Alan,

As far as I am aware the potato harvesters never got to N America,  But this does not prclude one or tow being sent over for trail purposes.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Time to give the M-H implement thread a boost.

It was the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Show this weekend, the usual Shire Horse team from Beamish Museum wanted another unusual implement to display in the Heavy Agricultural Horse section again.
So this year it was the turn of the No 6 Corn Binder or (Maize Binder here in England)

Just getting ready to go into the main ring on Saturday a gentleman came to the front to talk, a Canadian from Edmonton who recalled his youth and working one at home on the farm. Most British visitors over the weekend just kept asking what it was, they had never seen anything like it before.
