RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Back to the serial tag being cut off, the GP that was at Harry's show last weekend was serial # 300789-76 and the tag was not cut off. The highest number I have seen with the cut off tag is 300720 so the swichover was between 720 & 789 can anyone out there help pinpoint as to when the old tags were used up and the new tags were used?

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

On the way back from Paisley I stopped in at Bryon Miller's and took note of his Serial tags on two of his GPs. One was SN 300766 and SN 300770 both were oval tags with the bottom not cut off. This narrows it down just a bit more as to when the old tags with the bottom cut off and the newer tags were used. Now we need to find tractors between Serial Number 300720 and 300766 to solve this mystory.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Been working on one of my GPs lately got the new radiator on and looking smart!! Runs great now starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull of the crank.

Quite a difference in it's appearance now with the correct radiator, hood and seat.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

I'm anxious to go pick up my 4WD GP, but Mother Nature keeps being difficult. 7 inches of snow on top of ice last weekend. Freezing rain turning to snow Friday night into Saturday, and continuing through Saturday this coming weekend, moving from my home location in the direction I need to travel. Not good. Don't really want to expose it to a bunch of salt and road chemicals spray on the way home. Next opportunity will be between Christmas and New Year. The way our weather has turned recently, I might not be able to get it home until next spring!?! :-(

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

Well done on your latest addition John, I know you are anxious to get it home and in the barn, we are also anxious to see a photograph!!!

All the Best and keep well and warm in those winter conditions.

Malcolm.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

I get alot of calls about the Massey Harris GPs and how to work on them, the other day I got a call from a guy in Ohio who was taking off one of his wheels and broke the bull gear. If you have never taken a wheel off a GP before it can be a challenge, But if it is done right it usually is quite simple.

Once you got the hub cap off you need a couple 3/4 inch ready rods about a foot long and a strong bar on the end of them. Just screw the rods into the cast wheel and mount your bar between the rods and put a hydraulic jack between the bar and the wheel hub. You need to make a piece about four inches around so you only push on the 1/2 inch wide hub of the bull gear. Don't push on the center shaft of the wheel or you will more than likely break the bearing. Here are some pictures of what it looks like with the wheel off.

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

I thought I had posted it here, but apparently not...  I think I might have posted it with another discussion post.  Anyway, so that there is one in the "correct" location, here's my new addition after being unloaded here at the farm.  Missing a few things, but I do believe a pretty good start.  ;-)

RE:Massey Harris General Purpose Four Wheel Drive

John,

You still hold the title for owning the newest flathead GP that I know of, yours being 302941-66. I just found the second newest in Texas being Serial No. 302934-66 and now John F is in third place with his being Serial No. 302915-66
