RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Alan,

A small point, and I will stand corrected,  but I think that grey Pony was actually the second into the UK.  Didn't it come from an Indiana collector??

RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Even though I kept a very low profile at Newark I knew someone would notice I was not exhibiting a Wallis or M-H tractor, now I know why Alan was creeping around with his camera!!! The Titan was restored in the early 1980's and this was only it's second time at a show, the reason was to promote our I-H feature at the 2105 Carrington Rally.

Here are a few more shots of the larger M-F tractors this weekend, it was good to see both the 1200 and 1505 standing proud outside the entrance to the feature marquee.
There are not too many 1505's around now.

Malcolm.

For the M-H enthusiasts here is the "Nominated Prize Winning" M-H 744 tractor exhibited by top UK restorer David Aylward from Andover in Hampshire, caught here on camera early Saturday morning talking whilst his wife Avis cleans the tractor tyres!!! I don't know how he gets away with that???

RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Alan and Malcolm,

Thanks for sharing the photos from the Newark show.  To darn bad I couldn't have been there to witness in person (as was the plan before it got squashed by Q4 austerity measures...).

I couldn't help but notice the engine compartment side shields on the 1200, 1505. and 2680.  Not used to seeing those on this side of the pond.  Were those side shields required by some sort of government mandate?  Were they original equipment on these tractors or added on later (they look a bit like an afterthought to me...)

I did also note that the very fine looking MF 1080 did not have engine side shields...

Just curious.

Cheers,

JB

You are correct. The Ferguson Pony at  Newark was as you say the second to arrive in this country. I misunderstood the information that I was given. Sorry for the mistake.

John B.

I think Malcolm would be better than me to answer your question on side panels. I don't think they were anything to do with Health and Safety. They were often left off. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that when they would be working in your Country the temperatures would have been higher.

Here are somemore photos of Newark.  A 158 from France, a Potato Planter and some bigger Tractors that were outside. Malcolm may have some better photos of these as I got water on the camera lens as it was pouring with rain.

RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Hello, All. I see there is still confusion about grey ponys and their arrival in the U.K., so I think we should put it to bed. My information is as follows. The pony I bought from Gary PGA 23242, advertised on this website 17th June 2012. Deal done and advertised sold on 27th June 2012, which I think makes me the 1st U.K. owner. Julie Brownings Pony PGA 23473 arrived U.K. October 2013, making her the 1st to arrive in U.K. Mine arrived in late February 2014, should have arrived in container in August 2013 but we ran out of space and it came on my next shipment with all the parts that we had to dismantle from the SP Cornpicker and the Super 27 combine. Hope that clears everything up. The bigger picture is more important, in that we now have two Grey Ponies in preservation here in the U.K., both in good hands. I tried very hard to get both together at the Newark show, but it did not work out. Maybe Julie can get her Pony in the horse box and get to Marsham Summer Show on the 8th & 9th August 2015 where we will be featuring all things Massey Harris. So come on you U.S. and Canadian collectors, theres plenty of time to get your tickets, I need Massey men to help drive my collection. Best wishes to all, Bob.

It was such a shame your UK trip did not work out last week, I know you would really of enjoyed checking out all those red and grey tractors at Newark.

In answer to your question about the engine side panels fitted to new M-F 1200 and 1505 tractors, it is my understanding they all had them when they left the dealers premises new, no it was not a legal requirement just a safety precaution, as Alan said many of them got taken off and put in the barn and eventually scrapped in their working days, so now rare items to find and the tractors do look complete to my eye when you see them with them on.
My memories of working a 1505 in the 1980's on a large Heston square baler were not good, the V8 Caterpillar engine had too much power when engaging the PTO to start the baler and we kept screwing off PTO shafts, just behind the clutch, even happening when starting the baler on engine idle, let alone if you had a few revs on the engine,  it was not an easy job to replace and soon the 1505 went for "export" to Ireland and pastures greener, replaced by a Ford TW30.
Now the 1505 is a very rare tractor to find here in England.

You also mentioned the 2680 in the photo and I am pretty sure that series also had side panels fitted from new, very different shape to the 1200 and 1505, I know where there is a very original 2640 and it has them still in place.

RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Earlier in the year in this thread I posted some photo's of a superb model of a M-F combine harvester at The East of England Indoor Tractor show at Norwich, several of you admired the model.
Well here at Newark this weekend the owner has now completed his M-H 701 pick up baler and displayed it on a trailer with his M-F combine and Nuffield tractor. He even did working demonstrations with it tying up small bales of straw.

There was a huge crowd around his trailer all weekend, everyone was amazed at his level of engineering skills.
