RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

I think manifold covers for all models are a very rare item on your side of the pond, I guess many got discarded when the tractors were run on gasoline with you having such low prices per gallon compared to other parts of the world, like us here in UK all tractors had to run on Kerosene, or TVO (Tractor Vaporising Oil) a much cheaper fuel than our petrol.

Over the years I have had two batches of 12-20 / PA and CH manifold covers cast here in England, they have gone in all directions of the UK and even carried a pair across in my hand luggage on the plane for Dennis Brown, so they must be scarce. I only have one set left which I need for my single front CH.

Happy hunting,

Malcolm.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Tanks Malcolm, How did you have them made? Wood form and them hammered out or two molds and stamped?

RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

The first ones I had done in the early 1980's by a very local foundry,  they were cast in  grey cast iron, they used a very good original pair of shields as a pattern in the sand.
Like many foundry's, rules and regulations closed them down.

The more recent batch was done at a much larger foundry in South Lincolnshire, they cast them using the same process, but using a material called "ductile", certainly not a cheap end product pictured below.

RE:Challenger in buckets

They look nice. So they are cast I thought they would be sheet metal.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Yes they are cast Dan,

Wallis and M-H 20-30, had a single cast heat shield. (not seen very often)

Wallis and M-H 12-20, Pacemaker and CH had cast shields in pairs like the photo.

Both un-styled and styled M-H 25 had cast shields in pairs, just a larger version of the ones photographed.

I do need to get some 25's recast in the future, could use two more sets now.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Perhaps this is not the rght thread to put this question on but at least it is Challenger related.  Does anyone know of the serial number ranges for each of the two years for which the green Challengers were produced i.e. 1936 and 1937?  Both I and Keith Oltrogge only have a composite number for the two years

Thanks

john

RE:Challenger in buckets

Got some time to work on the Challenger this weekend. I had to buy a new exhaust pipe for the manifold so I got it mounted and all the manifold parts put together. Installed the Steering shaft with a new OEM steering wheel I found in the parts pile. Put new rear wheel seals in. Then I sand blasted the front wheels and primed them ready for paint.  I made a lot of gaskets which is time consuming. Then I took the carb apart and cleaned it all up. I will have to find a float for it as the one that is in there is shrunk and deformed.
The good news is I am running out of parts but still have a lot of bolts left over.
The next big job is to get the old lugs or what is left of them off the rear wheels. I have new lugs but I am going to have to spend a fortune on square head bolts as most of these are in bad shape. Then comes the radiator which I am sure will come apart with no broken studs. Yeah right!
The caps on the small round tank are shot anyone know if there is a replacement for them. I know I have seen that style cap on something.
Things are going well and I should have the fuel tanks back from the cleaner as I had it acid cleaned then I am going to seal it with tank sealer.
I still need to find a 30lb oil gauge that has the mounting studs on the back. So far all I can find is the type that screws into a 1/8 pipe fitting. Anyone know where to find one?

RE:Challenger in buckets

I have these two screens which I assume go in the air cleaner but I am not sure how they go. Also is the sheeps wool in the top part of the air cleaner like in the Wallis?

RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

The short screen goes on the bottom and the longer bent screen goes on the top with the angle going down on the right side. If you don't have the wad of horse hair to put in it you can just go to any hardware store and buy a furnace filter and pull the guts out of it and stuff it in between the two screens.
