RE:Challenger in buckets

So I wanted to work on the rear wheels today. I have had 2 or 3 people tell me the best way to take rusty nuts off is outside during a rain. Now I don't know the science behind it but these guys swear by it. So this morning it was raining so I got the big wrenches out and the impact wrench. Went out in the rain and tried the long wrench, no luck so I got the impact out. Well All I can say is I got wet! Time to get the gas axe out.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Anybody have a current paint code for the Green Challenger?

RE:Challenger in buckets

Worked on the radiator this weekend. The upper tank was shot so I had to make a new one. A friend of mine is a machinest and has helped me out a lot. Man how a milling machine makes things simpler. A TIG welder would be nice also.

Very nice work Dan, some good action shot photo's from the person operating the camera.

That radiator core top tank was certainly one of the week points on the "U" frame Massey's  after several years of service, they seem to rust out just the same in any part of the world.

It should last for many more years to come now and well into the next generation of Massey Collectors in your family.

Hope we soon hear a video of it running and expect you will have it painted and ready for this years Mount Pleasant Show?.

Not sure what is going on but I have to go back 3 pages to find a reply button.

Worked on the wheels this weekend. I had to drill out 56 3/4 square nuts to use as the spacers then put my new bolts and nuts on. I had to buy extra HD nuts to get the outside to be the right size. I have extra nuts, bolts, and spacers if anyone needs them. Now to give them another coat of primer then paint them.
I got my mag back from Kevin's Magneto and it looks like a new one.
My radiator is 99% back together I just have to make an adjustment on the side supports and then he can finish soldering it together.
I am getting close to start up day and is has me worried. What if I did something wrong or forgot something and the thing goes boom when it starts up. But I don't have much choice as I am out of parts.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Got the radioator back from the shop. New top tank and new core. Looks nice he did a great job. The mag is on and it is getting very close to start up. Some how I got to get those heavy wheels on the back.
This is an FYI for those working on a radiator. Most of the time the studs that hold the top on are rusted off or very close to it. Some of you may not know this but learned the hard way. Those acorn nuts on the side and top are not acorn nuts they are nuts with a acorn shaped cover that is press fitted on the nut. Without knowing this you can damage the cover. As in my case one of the side nuts was gone. The side nut is a 1/2 thread and a standard acorn nut is to small and doesn't look right on it. So I ordered from Mc Master-Carr a 91875A190 3/4 Acorn Nut and a 90248A038 3/4 to 1/2 thread locking insert which makes the acorn nut the same size as the original but with 1/2" threads. It is a tad taller but other than that it looks a lot better than the standard 1/2" acorn nut. I was able to save the top covers so I didn't need to do it to them but you could just get different sizes. I had to buy 5 of each so if anyone needs a side nut I have extras, Hopefully I have no leaks when I fill it with water. Start up is soon, very soon, I hope.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Well today was a big day I got the rear wheels on and now I can move it around. I got the carb done and most of the fuel line hooked up. I made the spark plug wires and finished all the little things. I have about 2 or 3 things to do and I am ready to start it. I am excited but nervous. Hopefuly Saturday will be the day.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

Looking good! I bet the butterflies are churning in your stomach.. I know the feeling, on one hand you can't wait but on the other hand you don't want to get in too big of a hurry because you don't want to see any unforeseen problems like water leaking out where it shouldn't or a gasket leaking after you went out of your way to make sure it wouldn't...

From the looks of it and fouling this whole project I don't think you will have any problems.

It would be nice if you could make a little video and put it on youtube with a link to it on here so we can enjoy the exhaust music with you.
