RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Alan,

I'm not sure  what it was used for if indeed it had a specific grain use.  I need to get into the old catalogues to see if I can enlighten myself.  Maybe Malcolm knows??

I am still dazed from the great pre sale evening that we had followed by the sale in splendid weather.  An event to remember.  It was nice to see items on sale there which we had previously seen sold at Larry Webber's Dome Valey sale and also up in Canada.

Tonight I am on with assembling a No 8 cream separator which my son bought in many pieces.  I have been checking out and cleaning them this afternoon and it looks to be more or less all there but one obvious missing component is the bell on the handle.  As we have a No 9 with the same bell I can get one made

Onwards.............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Malcolm and John, Thanks for sharing photos and stories from the auction.  Like Gary, I couldn't find enough signal out in PA to watch any of it online.

The tandem 55 would be a fun piece to have.  Would have been less expensive to get home if I had bought it the first time it sold on this side of the pond...

Back to John's question on the dealer chalk board, "Any others about?"  Here is a shot of mine as mounted on the wall in my shop.  In a bit rougher condition, particularly the lower left corner image of the tractor.  Still, a bit on the rare side, and nice to have on the wall in the shop.

Cheers,

JB

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Well, that is annoying.  Photo appears right side up as stored on my laptop file.  Why the heck does it show up sideways when attached here?  This is the second time this has happened to me recently.   Never did in the past...

Joe???

John,

There is less Gravitational Pull in Minnesota so I got your Chalkboard to stand up like is should in your post.

Here is a picture of the two I got sitting in my living room.

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Well this Auction thread and the excitement of the M-H blackboard has certainly raised some worldwide interest, great to see the ones from across the pond proudly displayed amongst the Massey Collections.

Alan,

With regard to John's mill you mentioned yesterday, this style of mill was advertised as a "grain grinder" and sometimes "burr mill", which I presume would grind any hard grain of corn (maize) barley oats, wheat or rye, into animal feed meal.

As the first photo shows it was available in three styles (1, 2 and 3) and seven sizes (6.5, 8, 9, 9.25, 10.5, 13 and 15 inch)

I have also photographed the chart to show the horsepower requirements and other interesting data on these mills.

Hope this answers some of the questions, I have two of them here, one with bagging attachment fitted as per the first photo, another just like the one John bought, they seem a very popular mill in their home country of Canada and being a piece of equipment which was used in the barn many have survived into preservation in amazingly good original condition, they are very ornate castings and the yellow pin striping on the burgundy red paint is very decorative, original hopper and shaker colour is green.

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

After writing the previous post about the mill, it reminded me to check my old photo's of the day when these pieces of M-H barn equipment were on the auction sale in Ontario.

Amazingly it was July 2008, (where has 11 years gone) when this photo was taken at the Ken Reichert auction in Ontario, the photo shows three pieces of barn equipment Bob purchased on the day, now they are with John and myself. It's amazing how this stuff moves around the Massey World.

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Malcolm Thank you for that information. After reading your post I realized that I had used my mouth instead of my eyes as they say as I have the information in a book called Massey-Harris Makers of Good Farm Implements since 1847 but thanks again anyway. So interesting when you can find out a bit more about a machine instead of just standing and looking at it. On another topic. I seemed to have read that the website was going to be made more mobile friendly from July. It still doesn't like my Android. Alan

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Malcolm,

I remember the Reichert sale well - another great Massey day and where I SPENT quite a bit!  I remember helping load the big chopper that you now have - quite a heavy item.

When will the next big Massey sale be and where?

John

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

John,

Yes the Reichert sale was another very memorable event in the history of Massey-Harris sales, below is a photo of you taking a "needed rest" after buying two tractors side by side in the same sale, I think you was gathering your thoughts and counting your money before going to pay the bill. !!

Well you ask about the next possible M-H sale, well what can I say other than yours in the West or mine in the East, we are now the only two collections in UK with total M-H diversity, there may well be the odd sale occur in the future with a few M-H tractors. Our collections cover the M-H spectrum from Company history, through manufacturing, dealers and promotional sales items, all manner of goods sold from bicycles to tractors and implements and much, much more.

That type of sale is not going to come up too often on either side of the Atlantic and to answer your question, it could possibly be my sale before yours, you are so lucky having a son who is "very enthusiastic" long may that enthusiasm continue in the West, just wish it was the same here in the East, I just keep hoping it will be one day and I live long enough to see it.

Malcolm.

RE:Massey-Harris Auction.

Malcolm,

Thanks  for posting the technical details of the different mill sizes.  On closer examination of mine this morning I found that it has the size boldy cast at the bottom of the round end plate.  It tunrs out to be an 8 inch (diameter) so a smaller model.

What are your two?

John
