Malcolm:

Wow looks great! now you have to talk Steve out of his two row to give it a big brother.

If it works here are some pictures of a one row planter I got from a guy in Kansas he said it was a Massey Harris I can't find any <MH> logo on it only casting numbers. It has a shaft drive off the front wheel.

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

Hi Joe,

A little Magic Marker and the handles could say "Massey Harris" all over them.  I like that direct drive!!

Both items are great seeder examples!!  I have a very old one that belonged to my father-in-law but it is nothing special.  It did plant a bunch of sweet corn very effectively over the years though.

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

Well it's been a while since I posted this M-H single row seeder thread on here and following my recent trip across the pond for a month there is a bit more information to add.

First is an Australian M-H catalog showing another similar type of machine as the one Joe posted.

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

The next addition to my collection which followed me home this year is a hand corn planter manufactured by The Wiard Plow Company of Batavia NY who were taken over by M-H.

It is called the "Automatic Corn Planter" and advertised in the period 1880 to 1900, has anyone ever used one of these?  or know of others in preservation / collections? a very useful tool I am sure for planting small amounts of corn.

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

Oh, the Corn Jobber!  That is the term I have always heard it called.  We have one that used to be my grandfathers.  It is operated similar to a post hole digger with two handles.  Once you jab it into the ground, you spread the handle and the corn drops into the ground.

Yours looks a bit more updated, or a lazier verison.  WIth only one handle and a ground assist.  I assume you jab it into the ground and the tilt a bit so the "shoe" hits the ground and the corn drops down.

Yours looks much more fun to operate.  Let me know after you plant your corn in your garden!

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

Thanks Drew,

I like your terminology "Corn Jobber" and your right when you tilt it sideways it opens and the seed would drop down.

It sounds like the corn planting experience has been passed down through your families generations, so when you plan your trip across the pond you can plant some corn and experience "the lazier version", bring some quality seed in your suitcase!!!

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

oh it is a very (not really) widely used term.  You can actually google images of "corn jobber" and find other pictures of the two handled model.

I am sure I will have no problem importing corn!

Malcolm:

If we get together with our planters now we could keep up to Gary's two row planter!! I just recently picked up a Wiard Plow Company one row seeder that is the twin to yours. It is in very nice original shape with readable writing on it. The only difference I can see is the lid on the seed box is just a slight bit diffent than yours.

These two Wiard Plow Company Seeders have to be the last two left on earth in this shape!!! A Very nice find!!

RE:M-H Single Row Seeder.

Well done Joe,

Another very very nice item there in your collection, now we should arrange "The Great Hand Planting" event sometime when I am over in the spring, I am sure we could give Gary and his two row planter a run for his money if we both focused on the job in hand, so long as there are no distractions along the way!!!!
