Indiana State Massey Show

The Indiana Massey State Show was hosted by the White River Valley Antique Association in Elnora, Indiana September 10-13, 2015.  Although the rains came most of the weekend and the temperatures were cooler than normal, it turned out to be a great weekend with plenty of things to do and see.  Over 85 Massey related items were on display.  Some special items brought lots of looks and conversations.  The star of the entire show was Tom Jensen’s Massey Harris #2 as it sat proudly in the center of the Massey display.

Another more unique tractor appeared after some arm twisting!!  It just happened to be a Landini tractor owned by a young gentleman not far from the showgrounds.  Tony Newton had asked about the relationship between Massey Ferguson and Landini.  After reading an article in John Farnworth’s Legacy book, he was convinced there had to be a connection.  With that in mind, it was not hard for Tony to go home and proudly bring his Landini 5860 to the Massey display.  That bright blue tractor added a little different color in the sea of red!!

There was a window of sunshine on Saturday morning so about 14 tractors, drivers and support vehicles headed off for a 40 mile tractor drive through the beautiful Amish farmland of Daviess County. The group traveled to Montgomery, Indiana to enjoy a huge smorgasbord meal at the Gasthof Amish Village Restaurant.  Several spouses met up with the group to enjoy the fabulous lunch.  Then it was off for the return trip through various communities and rolling hills back to the showgrounds.  Surprisingly, several drivers shared that this was the first drive they had participated in!  There will be more to come in the near future after this grand experience!!

With an excellent silent auction and a delicious banquet served in the Massey display building, everyone went home with a big Massey smile on their faces!

RE:Indiana State Massey Show

Gary,

I am very pleased to see you all getting enthused with the "typical British Tractor Road Run", they are very popular here now for those enthusiasts who do not get to play with their tractors in the field and for those collectors who do not want to get their tractors dirty, These "Road Runs" are currently making lots of money from the entry fee for various charities over here. Of course I notice you are driving on the wrong side of the road!!!!!

Thank you for posting the photo's in the gallery, I have two curious questions,

1. The General tractor painted in M-H colours, does this tractor have M-H on the tag? we saw one last year clearly showing built by Massey Harris.
Is this paint job the owners choice or was there indication it was originally red and yellow?

2. The last photo of the logo M-H sign on the wooden boards, is that an aged dealer sign or a recent collector creation made to look old? hard to tell from the photo.

Malcolm.

RE:Indiana State Massey Show

Hi Malcolm,

Our “Road Run” was one the first ones we had done in conjunction with our show, especially in the southern part of the state so it was a fun experience.  Of course, it is always easier when you have great food waiting for you at your destination!!

Not far from me is a 100 mile drive that takes you through about 30 historic covered bridges.  It is a two day event but while worth the time.  If the calendar ever allows me to participate in it, I will be there.  We will need to drum up some other Massey friends to make it even better!!

As for the General , I had to take a pic of the tag just for you (and anyone else that might ask about the Massey connection).  The tag is below!!  Definitely made for MH.  That tag would be the only way I could buy one of these but would love to own one!!

The owner has several Generals, Averys, etc  in his collection.  He painted it MH red and yellow “because he could”!!!  He knows it is supposed to be orange but wanted to make the statement that it was a Massey Harris derivate.  I had seen this tractor at Penfield several years ago but had never met the owner.  As usual, he was a very nice individual!!

Now to the sign -  As you well know there are some things that are best when they are not shared!!  You always want to keep people guessing what things might be.   I will say one of your suggested answers is correct however!!

Here is another tractor that appeared at the Indiana Show.  It fits into the same category as the sign!!  It also appeared at Massey Days and the New Windsor show in Illinois!!  Maybe John F will know the history of this tractor.  It is crazy but real!!
