The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Good Evening,

Just a quick reminder that this event is scheduled at Sauder Village for this next weekend, Sept. 29th and 30th and October 1st. Check the Clipper newsletter or click the event tab above for more details.

We will be plowing, discing, harrowing and drilling about 100 acres of wheat over two days with all Massey equipment. Come and help or just come and watch because it's sure to be a good time.

See You There!

RE:The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Hello,

As of Sunday evening the beans were still standing in the field and Massey tillage and planting equipment was starting to arrive.  As I write this the National Weather Service is calling for a 40 to 70 percent chance of showers from Wednesday through Saturday at Archbold.  Total percipitation over the next 5 days of up to 2 inches.  All this and I didn't mow hay or wash my car!

Robin and I are heading to Ohio in the morning and will keep you updated on this site as to the latest status at Sauder Village.

It's a good thing farmers are eternal optimists!?!

RE:The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Good Morning,

Robin and I are at Sauder Village in Archblod Ohio.  They had .60" of rain here late yesterday but the sky has some breaks of sun in it but hopes are high that we can still get started later today.  The first field drains well and the rain is holding north of us this morning.  There are tractors and equipment here, more on the way and everyone is headed to the site to get ready.

Thursday Evening,

More tractors and equipment arrived today.  Dave was able to lay out the lands. And it started raining again about 6:00pm. We'll see what Friday brings.

Friday Afternoon,

No rain yet today but no sunshine and drying wind either.  Tomorrow doesn't look good as rain is headed this way as I write this.  Gary is looking into how many could stay over until Sunday and Monday to get the project completed.  Stay tuned!

Malcolm and All,

It's now Saturday morning and we had another good rain during our banquet last evening.  The sun has been out this morning but the clouds are thickening up again and there is a 60% of rain this afternoon and tonight.  Some are taking their equipment home, some have left their equipment and are coming back when it dries and a few are waiting it out.

Robin and I are staying one more day but need ro leave Sunday morning as I have to be back at work Monday.

I have been taking pictures and will share some when I have time and a better computer.

RE:The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Saturdey Evening,

It rained lightly again after noon today and with an uncertain forcast The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio has been cancelled. The wheat will be planted by a local farmer and we will convene back here again in July of 2017 to harvest that wheat.

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard and/or traveled so far to help make this event possible. Anyone who has farmed knows rhat you can't beat Mother Nature. Being delayed by the weather is just a fact of farm life. We forfit this one to her and will come back next time even more determined to get the job completed!

I will post photos when I return home to my desktop computer.

RE:The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Bob & Malcolm,

Sunday noon from Mansfield, Oh about 2.5 hrs. SE of Sauder Village. It rained hard here last night.

First I want to Thank You Bob for using the MCA to post latest news on The Great Planting. I know there were many man and lady hours putting the effort together and I'm sorry for all that effort to be wasted. Hopefully at the banquet and at meals lots of knowledge was shared and friendships enhanced.

As a non tractor owning MCA member I was really looking forward to the event. To watch equipment nearly as old or older (1947) than myself in action would have been fun.
The days of a straight furrow are seldom seen with no-till, chisel plow, etc. I can remember my Dad being proud of his straight rows and giving me "H" when mine didn't look as good.

I did get to step back in time a little this week. I brush hogged about 175 acres of wheat and oat stubble with lots of foxtail and green wheat strips out the back of a IH rotary combine. I drove a IH 5088 and 1086 repainted with 15' mowers and NO gps.

Mowing quickly got boring but many woodchuck (groundhog) holes kept me awake. I also mowed waterways in bean fields with the occational wash out slapping me around.l
Mowing along tree lines meant dogging limbs and big rocks thrown there over the decades. (rented properties) I still kept the rounds fairly straight while daydreaming of my youth, Dad, and the ole days.

Looking forward to July 2017. I hope to help you Bob take some pics so we can show Malcolm we can have fun in the "New World". Thanks also Charlie Cline for the rainy update.

RE:The Great Planting of Northwest Ohio

Good Evening Again,

I've selected a few images to give you an idea of how the Great Almost Planting looked.  Some show equipment that was never unloaded.  Some of equipment ready to roll.  Some of displays and a couple of loading out and repair work. Watch the "Clipper" for more photods!

Make plans to join us on July 14th and 15th of 2017 as we return to harvest the wheat. Watch here and in the newsletter for details as we finalize those plans.

I want to close by thanking four of the many people that worked to make this event come together.

First Steven and Jennifer from Sauder Village.  Thanks for taking a chance on us and being patient as we struggled with the weather.  Your facilities are wonderful.

Darren Meyers.  Thanks for your displays, equipment and for finishing the job we left unfinished,

And Gary Sager our retiring MCA Activities Chairman. Thanks for the many hours, miles and sleepless nights you invested to make this happen.  It was a "Great" event even though we didn't do any planting!

Till next time  "Keep Calm and Massey On!"

        Bob
