Workin' My Massey

This is a picture of my Dad's old MF180 diesel planting corn earlier this month.  It pulls my 6 row conservation planter with ease.  The 180 sports it's original paint and nearly 10,000 hours on the tach.  The engine has never been into further than the valve cover and at one time was putting out 74 hp factory stock.  That's about 10 hp over what they were rated new.

I have a have a MF 2640 and MF 285 I could put on the planter but like to use the 180 because of it's handling, visibility, light weight and fuel economy.  When I was pulling a four row I used to be able to plant over 250 acres of notill on a tank of fuel.

If you used a 50 year old or older Massey to help put in this year's crop please share it's story and a picture if possilbe.  Not all the corn in Iowa is planted with a 40 foot or larger GPS guided planter!

RE:Workin' My Massey

Hey Bob,

Lookin' good!  I wish the photo was a bit larger so I could zoom in for a closer look!  Unfortunately I haven't gotten an opportunity to put any of my old Masseys into the actual spring planting operation here.  :-(

RE:Workin' My Massey

John,

Here is another shot from a slightly different angle.  Hopefully in a bigger file so you can zoom in.  You'll notice the rear wheels are reversed like the ones on your 180.  These were done so Dad could mount a New Idea Superpicker on it.  I'm guessing yours carried a picker too since it also had the tricycle front and was missing the weight bracket.  With the New Idea picker there was a frame or bracket that bolted on in place of the weight bracket to keep the picker frame from flexing into the side of the tractor.  I have a snapshot of that around here somewhere that I will share later.

RE:Workin' My Massey

Bob,

The photo you sent via email is nice and big.  That tractor is in amazing cosmetic shape for still having the original paint!!  Way, way better than mine, which I am sure is original, but not much paint left...

You read my mind on the wheels.  I was going to ask you if they had always been turned around that way, and if there was a reason why.  The mounted corn picker makes perfect sense.  I think mine must have had something mounted on the front due to a couple of "brackets" bolted to the frame.  I was suspecting front mount cultivators.

I am attaching a photo of one of these "brackets".  Does anybody recognize this and know for sure what it was used for?

Thanks,

JB

My son still plants with our 1130. He says it's his favorite tractor until it gets cold out.

RE:Workin' My Massey

Did a little plowing with my 333 and a #28 2 bottom plow about a month ago. Started with the Orchard Pacemaker I got from Tub Drohman's auction but after about 10 hours of running it the radiator was not circulating and started to heat up so I parked it and hooked up with the 333. Can't believe I didn't even get any pictures of the Pacemaker with the plow but here are some of the 333.

Joe,

Is that your GPS System over your left shoulder?  Seems to be working for you!!

RE:Workin' My Massey

John,

In my professional unprofessional opinion the bracket on your 180 is not beefy enough to be a front mounted cultivator braket.  My 2nd 180 has a similiar (but not indentical) bracket to attach a brace for the MF 65 loader mounted on it.  I'm 99% sure the New Idea company made this loader for Massey.  Your bracket could be from another after market loader.  I'll attach a photo of mine for you to compare.

RE:Workin' My Massey

Well, that certainly is a similar size pin in a similar location, so you are probably right.  Whatever it was, it won't be on this tractor again, and those brackets are now off.  ;-)

Finally back in the field here the last couple of days.  Hoping a few wet spots get dry enough to spot-in some more soybeans tomorrow...

RE:Workin' My Massey

John,

Never say never you may be looking for a loader to put on it in a couple years....

Got my corn planted yesterday and again the 333 did the job. I didn't have much choice as it is one of the few tractors I have with hydraulics and you have to have a low PTO with this planter or it really makes the shaft clatter. May catch some guff from using an International planter but for the price of $150.00 I can take some guff. It is really a good planter that is almost fool proof and very user friendly.
