What lubricant for pacemaker steering box?

Hello all.

So I've just removed a surprisingly large amount of water and thick oily mess out of the steering box - which begs the question what should be in there?

Manual says use a "special lubricant" without giving much of a clue as to what that is.

Top of my list would be a one-shot grease; but thought I'd ask what you good people use.

Cheers Jon.

Jon,

Good question, I am sure this is one of the most overlooked things on these old girls, "if it isn't broke don't check it" kind of thing. I looked through several books and same thing       " Special Lubricant"  Heck the Wallis 12-20 book I couldn't even find any reference to the steering box...

I'm guessing just a good greasing every now and then, It says every 60 hours in the MH 25 book with the special lubricant whatever that is??

I looked in the Massey Harris GP manual and surprisingly it says to use a light transmission oil in winter and heavy transmission oil in summer. this is the same gearbox used on the later Wallis tractors just the opposite worm gear.

Anyone else got suggestions?

Joe

I use a good quality general purpose medium grease in my Masseys, about every30 working hours, to push the muck out rather than putting lubricant in. All lubricants have improved enormously since the 1930's

Thanks for the New year card, I reciprocate the sentiment!

So I found that Millers produce a “Worm Steering Box Oil” for vintage vehicles. Perfect.
Its a strange oil, very sticky and stringy, yet very low viscosity.

Popped a new oil seal in and filled it up. Considering what a horrible filthy mess it was in there it is remarkable how well it’s cleaned up.

More happy MH days 😁

cheers Jon.
